Low Risk Deployment Passenger Airbag System 2007-01-0349

A low risk deployment passenger airbag system has been developed to reduce the risk of injuries caused by airbag inflation to small size occupants and improve the restraint of adult occupants in high speed crashes as well. The new passenger airbag system has two airbags mounted on the instrument panel in such a way to reduce the inflator outputs and enhance deployment modes toward the occupant. A series of static and dynamic tests has been conducted to prove the concept using the FMVSS-208 test procedures and other due care conditions. The test results show that the new passenger airbag system can not only meet the injury criteria set by the government regulation but also enable deployment for all size occupants, belted or unbelted.
