Performance and Emission Characteristics of Diesel-2 Ethoxyethyl Acetate-Nitromethane Blends on a CI Engine - An Experimental Study 2020-01-0347

The use of Compression Ignition engines due to higher thermal efficiency and better fuel economy has increased many folds as of late. However, diesel fuelled engines are known to have higher smoke and NOx emissions compared to their counterparts. In the current study, efforts have been made towards improving performance and reducing the emissions simultaneously by modifying the fuel. Two oxygenated additives, namely 2-Ethoxyethyl Acetate (EEA) and Nitromethane (NM) were added to the diesel fuel in different proportions (v/v %) to form ternary blends. In current study, performance was evaluated with different blends viz., D-EEA5-NM2 (93% Diesel, 5% 2-Ethoxyethyl Acetate, 2% Nitromethane), D-EEA10-NM2, D-EEA15-NM2, D-EEA20-NM2 and was compared with that of pure diesel. The experiments were carried out on a Diesel Engine with a standard CR of 17:1 and Injection Pressure of 200 bar for five loading conditions, i.e., 0% (no load), 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% load conditions. The BTE, BSFC and emissions of smoke, HC, CO and NOx gases were measured and analysed. D-EEA10-NM2 and D-EEA15-NM2 blends showed considerably better results among all blends. At full load, D-EEA10-NM2 showed an improvement in BTE by 1.78% and reduction in HC and smoke emissions by 48.26% and 62.33% respectively, however, BSFC increased by 9.79% and NOx and CO emissions also increased by 54.29% and 23.78% respectively as compared to diesel. For D-EEA15-NM2, at full load, BTE improved by 0.94% and HC and smoke emissions reduced by 58.93% and 59.77% respectively, while BSFC, NOx and CO emissions were seen to increase by 12.89%, 55.16% and 14.72% respectively as compared to diesel.
