SELECTION OF TIRES FOR EARTHMOVING EQUIPMENT for BEST TRACTION, LOWEST ROLLING RESISTANCE, AND GOOD GROUND SUPPORT 510056

This is a discussion of haulage tires from the standpoint of the type of ground on which they are to be used.
The basic elements of size, ply rating and basic tread configurations are considered together with load, inflation and deflections, each for several of the innumerable soil conditions encountered. The effect of basic moisture conditions, dry, moist and wet, are taken into consideration in the selection of tires for use on sand, loam, clay, rock and roadways. The author has presented his views on the design characteristics of five types of tires to cover all conditions. Two of these type tires are recommended for soft ground and three for hard surfaces. Each type is classified for the ground condition and from the standpoint of whether it is to be used as a driver or an idler, or both.
