The various factors in automotive instrument panel design are explained, and the effect these factors have on each other. The basic problem in design is space, which should provide the driver with: the information and controls necessary for proper operation of the vehicle, and items of comfort and convenience for both the driver and the front seat passengers. Careful attention must be paid to the types and location of instruments, location and operation of controls, serviceability of the components in and underneath the panel, driver and front seat passenger safety, and cost and weight.
