Overhead Cam Valve Train Design Analysis with a Digital Computer 660350
Methods and techniques are presented for evaluating the ability of a valve train design employing an overhead cam in combination with a pivoting type rocker arm follower to perform its required functions within allowable limits for known variables. The paper describes the mathematical problem statements used for evaluating the valve train system and the computer program developed for computing contact stress, static and dynamic forces and loads acting in the system, rubbing velocity, dynamic valve spring force, and various other design variables necessary to gain a better understanding of the mechanism involved. The paper also describes details of the computer program concerning the various types of design curves acceptable as input to the program, and the printed and plotted output data available from the program. Where applicable, correlation of the theoretical data with experimental data is included.
