Design and development of the new American Motors 390 cubic inch V8 engine is described. Large displacement is enclosed within minimal dimensions with moderate weight. Air flow bench-tested induction and exhaust system components enhance power. Retention of common components and common machining with the predecessor 290 and 343 engines assured manufacturing economy.
