The Influence of Induction and Exhaust System Design on Power Producing Characteristics of Diesel Engines 700535

Engine power production is proportional to weight of air trapped in the combustion chamber. This paper discusses how inlet system restriction, inlet air temperature, and exhaust back pressure influence engine performance. A family of four cycle diesel engines from the naturally aspirated (90 bmep) to the turbocharged-aftercooled (220 bmep) is studied. System limitations are established and future trends in engine design are discussed.
