The Supercharged 1.3 L Engine of the Volkswagen Polo Coupe G 40 Record Car 870702
Volkswagen Polo Coupés established new 24 h and 5000 km time long distance records, respectively, for the 1.5 litre class in autumn 1986. The 4-cylinder engine was fitted with a novel supercharger, driven by the engine crankshaft. Fuel injection with closed loop metering and 3 way catalysts were used to reach at high rated power and to meet today's most stringent emission standards. The performance data including the brake specific fuel consumption results are given. The engine gearbox unit, the supercharger, and the in car installation with the cooling circuits of water, engine oil, gearbox oil, and charge air are described.
