Cold Scuff Evaluation of 3HA - The Engine Alloy Developed in Australia 871203

Although the use of aluminium alloys in the automotive industry is gaining impetus, their generally poor wear resistance has required the use of hard metal inserts in critical wear areas. A new engine technology package, based on Comalco's recently developed 3HA casting alloy, eliminates the need for cylinder liner inserts in engine block applications. This paper outlines, in summary form, the properties of 3HA and describes the engine testing carried out on the alloy.
