The Application of Precision Cooling to the Cylinder-Head of a Small, Automotive, Petrol Engine 880263

Wall temperatures and heat fluxes have been measured at various locations within standard and precision-cooled cylinder-heads. The influence of engine speed, load, coolant-pump speed and coolant pressure on combustion-chamber wall-temperatures have been investigated systematically and the results compared with predictions from a flow-forced, sub-cooled, nucleate boiling model. Nucleate and film boiling detected in high, heat-flux zones of the standard cylinder-head are shown to be largely suppressed by the application of precision cooling.
