Seene-of-the-Crime - Running Surfaces in the Sealing Interface of Shaft Seal to Shaft 880306
Modern seals made out of fluorpolymerbased elastomers which have a low radial force have a low wear rate. A high proportion of engine oil leakages arises from shaft wear and grooving arising from todays higher level of oil contamination. A summary is given of the test results with respect to power loss, seal lip temperature, shaft and seal lip wear about the effects of various shaft materials with many different finishes running in oils of various degrees of contamination.
Wear rings made of stainless steel which have elastomeric seats and improved heat transfer result in the solution giving longest lives because they exhibit the least wear and grooving.
