High Strength Elastomers of Hydrogenated NBR Containing Zinc Oxide and Methacrylic Acid 890359

The physical properties of peroxide-cured, hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) containing zinc oxide (ZnO) and methacrylic acid (MAA) were investigated. Specifically, the properties of peroxide-cured HNBR reinforced by ZnO and MAA were studied in relation to their degree of their hydrogenation dependence, and compared with those of other elastomers and HNBR reinforced by HAF black. In addition, further studies on HNBR elastomer blended with silica and EPDM have also been made.
The peroxide-cured HNBR reinforced by ZnO and MAA has such excellent properties as (1) high tensile strength of 40 - 60 MPa, (2) high rebound, (3) extremely low dependence of hardness and modulus on temperature. In the case of blends with silica and EPDM, the compression set and ozone resistance are improved.
