Resilient Organic Friction Materials For Torque Limiting Differentials 890949

The need for improved torque limiting differentials has been recognized for off-highway equipment. To construct a limited slip differential, in contrast with a locking differential, multi-disc clutches have generally been used to achieve passive torque management. However, such limited slip differentials were noted for objectionable noise, harsh action, and erratic performance. Using a new system of special resilient organic friction materials it appears possible to overcome these unsatisfactory characteristics while maintaining present axle lubricants and eliminating the need for special friction modifier additions. Continuing lab and field testing has shown that this approach is durable, reliable, and inexpensive.
