Dynamic Testing of a Side Facing Seat 951165

Dynamic seat testing requirements defined in Federal Aviation Regulations [1] (FAR) 23.562 and 25.562 have created numerous challenges for seat designers, as well as for engineers certifying aircraft interior installations. Side facing seats require occupant restraint systems which differ significantly over those for forward and aft facing occupants and occupant protection criteria must be redefined. Energy absorbing devices and control of material stiffness have proven to be means of meeting the dynamic criteria for side facing seats with regard to strength and occupant protection. In addition, dynamic tests need to be set up such that the test dummy is not adversely influenced by the set-up methods.
