Continuous Variable Tumble - A New Concept for Future Lean Burn Engines 960607

Based on unsteady flow investigations by particle-tracking-velocimetry and the analysis of flame propagation within the combustion chamber, the influence of different types of charge motion and turbulence on the combustion process will be demonstrated, and the principal working mechanisms will be discussed. Combustion system requirements of future lean burn engines will be derived on this basis. The potential of a new concept with variable charge motion will be evaluated in relation to today's technologies.
