Effect of Deadweight on Frame and Correlation with Human Passenger in a Two Wheeler

Deadweight as payload is an important parameter, which affects the vehicle dynamics and durability of the vehicle. This paper presents a study performed to evaluate the effect of deadweight on dynamic input load, suspension operation, and fatigue life of frame in a two wheeler. Also, an optimization exercise was undertaken to correlate and optimize deadweight with a human payload in terms of equivalent damage to the frame. Strain, wheel acceleration, and suspension displacement data were acquired with pillion and multiple deadweights and compared. Relative damage spectrum (RDS) characterization and best-fit optimization methods were used for deadweight correlation. It was observed that with deadweight addition dynamic loads decreases on the front wheel while increases on the rear. Strain damage wise increasing deadweights have marginal effects on the front zone of the frame while on the middle and rear side, deadweights are detrimental.

Brake Squeal – Digital Twinning of a Brake Dynamometer

Brake squeal is a common phenomenon across all types of vehicles. It becomes prominent in the absence of other noise sources, as in the case of electric vehicles. Earlier simulation attempts date back to late nineties and early 2000s. Identification of unstable modes of the coupled system of brake rotor and pads, and occasionally some caliper components, was the primary goal. Simulating the rotation of the rotor along with squeezing of the pads was attempted in a multi-body dynamics tools with flexible representation of rotor and pads. Though this gave some insights into the dynamics of stopping mechanism, squeal required capturing the nonlinearities of the contact in a more rigorous sense. Also, efforts were made to capture noise from vibrations using boundary- and finite- element methods [1].

Developing EPB Analytic Model Based on Multi-Flexible Body Dynamics

The current braking system of a vehicle includes a parking braking system, which consists of a Motor on Caliper (MOC) that generates hydraulic main braking and electric parking braking through a caliper structure. When designing the MOC braking system, it is important to consider an analytical model that can predict the performance of the parking clamping force and the torque generated between the disk and caliper interactions. However, in previous designs, system predictions were often based on simplified structural calculations or incomplete Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. In this paper, a study was conducted to predict the system performance using Multi-flexible Body Dynamics (MFBD) analysis. Firstly, a kinematic model (MBD) was developed for the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system currently used in mass-produced vehicles. And the MBD model which based on kinematics was the initial model for this study.

A Technical Review on Existing Methodologies and Industry Practices for Powertrain Mounting System Development through Multi Body Dynamics

The main purpose of the powertrain mounting system is to reduce excessive motion created by the powertrain system as well as to isolate vibration and noise from being transferred to the main system There are two fundamental requirements which needs to be fulfilled by mounting system, those are static requirement and dynamic requirement. Where the static requirements states that it should support the whole weight of the powertrain system under sever driving conditions and to avoid the metal-to-metal contact between oscillating parts of engine and structure. Dynamic requirement states that it should efficiently isolate the vibration and unbalanced forces, furthermore it should allow the sufficient movement of powertrain so as it will not damage the structure of the chassis. The mounting system also plays a significant role in vehicle ride and handling, as it controls the motion of largest mass of the vehicle i.e., powertrain.

Emissions of Aerospace Fuels F-24 and Jet-A in a Jet Engine and Correlation with Combustion Characteristics from a Constant Volume Combustion Chamber

An investigation into emissions differences and their correlations with differing combustion characteristics between F24 and Jet-A was conducted. Raw emissions data was taken from a single stage jet engine by a FTIR gas analyzer. Measurements of H2O, CO2, CO, NOx, and total hydrocarbon emissions (THC) were taken at 60K, 65K, and 70K RPM. At 70K RPM Jet-A and F-24 the emissions were similar at approx.: 4% H2O, 3% CO2, 970 PPM CO, 28 PPM NOx. Jet-A THC emissions were approx.: 1200 PPM THC, F24 THC emissions were lower by over 60%. The significantly lower amount of THC emissions for F24 suggests more complete combustion compared to Jet-A.

To many, a digital twin offers “functionality,” or the ability to virtually rerun events that have happened on the real system and the ability to simulate future performance. However, this requires models based on the physics of the system to be built into the digital twin, links to data from sensors on the real live system, and sophisticated algorithms incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). All of this can be used for integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) decisions, such as determining future failure, root cause analysis, and optimized energy performance. All of these can be used to make decisions to optimize the operation of an aircraft—these may even extend into safety-based decisions.

Reproducing the Motorcycle Equation of Motion with Lumped Stiffness on Multi-Body Dynamics Model

A new simulation model for motorcycle motion is presented. The model was reproduced the equation of motion which called 10 degrees of freedom (10-DoF) motorcycle model using multi-body dynamics. There are some good reasons to reconstruct equation model by multi-body dynamics, because computer technology helped development of tools which is versatile to expand model. Straight line stability characteristics of motorcycle have been studied by using an equation of motion model for a long time. This model was originally developed by Sharp as a 4-DoF model, later Aoki developed 10-DoF model by adding 6-DoF to take frame stiffness into account. The eigenvalues of the Weave and Wobble mode showed some disagreement between the equation of motion model and the new multi-body dynamics model. The frame lateral bending is represented by the “equilibrium of lateral force” in the 10-DoF equation of motion. It turned out that “lateral force at bending Point” was not expressed in the equation.

Modeling of piston pin rotation in a large bore gas engine

In an engine system, the piston pin is subjected to high loading and severe lubrication conditions, and pin seizures still occur during new engine development. A better understanding of the lubricating oil behavior and the dynamics of the piston pin could lead to cost- effective solutions to mitigate these problems. However, research in this area is still limited due to the complexity of the lubrication and the pin dynamics. In this work, a numerical model that considers structure deformation and oil cavitation was developed to investigate the lubrication and dynamics of the piston pin. The model combines multi-body dynamics and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. A routine was established for generating and processing compliance matrices and further optimized to reduce computation time and improve the convergence of the equations. A simple built-in wear model was used to modify the pin bore and small end profiles based on the asperity contact pressures.

The automotive sector is evolving both globally and as well as in India. The Indian customer’s expectations from an automobile are also evolving at fast pace. This is resulting in a continuous shrinkage of the time available for vehicle development. To meet customers’ expectation of superior cabin thermal comfort it is important to predict cabin cooling performance at early stage. This can be achieved through thermal simulation. Existing studies of cabin thermal simulation explained the method of co-simulation. Wherein, Input for the cabin was used a grill air temperature which was obtained from the physical test. It showed good correlation for the cabin inside air temperature with actual test. However, cabin cooling performance does not only depend on cabin structure & layout but also, affected by AC system & its component level performance. AC systems and components were not considered in previous studies.

Partial discharge (PD) detection has been always a fundamental tool, potentially, for the design, quality control, commissioning, and reliability monitoring for the of insulation systems. The word “potentially” stems from the objective consideration of the intrinsic limitations suffered by the existing partial discharge, PD, measurement technologies, especially the need of experts to interpret results and the lack of clear correlation between PD-related quantities, and the condition-based maintenance approach. On the whole, a thorough revision of insulation systems design procedures and of the tools to evaluate aging and failure risk is needed, especially in components of electrical assets which are critical in terms of reliability, resilience, and safety.

Energy Storage Requirements and Implementation for a Lunar Base Microgrid

Future lunar missions will utilize a Lunar DC microgrid (LDCMG) to construct the infrastructure for distributing, storing, and utilizing electrical energy. The LDCMG’s energy management, of which energy storage systems (ESS) are crucial components, will be essential to the success of the missions. Standard system design currently employs a rule-of-thumb approach in which design methodologies rely on heuristics that may only evaluate local power balancing requirements. The Hamiltonian surface shaping and power flow control (HSSPFC) method can also be utilized to analyze and design the lunar LDCMG power distribution network and ESS. In this research, the HSSPFC method will be utilized to determine the ideal energy storage requirements for ESS and the optimally distributed control architecture.

Nuclear Electric Strayton Propulsion

This work establishes and describes a new nuclear electric propulsion technology category for achieving a much lower system alpha in future space transport vehicles to significantly reduce transit time to Mars and other deep space science mission destinations. The new power conversion technology combines the Brayton cycle with a thermoacoustic Stirling cycle into a Closed Strayton Quad Generator that significantly increases the efficiency, specific power, and maximum turbine inlet temperature while insuring high reliability and long-life operation. A proposed design of this power conversion system is presented along with a performance and mass comparison to current state of practice.

Analysis and Testing of Optimal Power Control Strategy for NASA Moon Base Interconnected DC Microgrid System

As a part of NASA’s efforts in space, options are being examined for an Artemis moon base project to be deployed. This project requires a system of interconnected, but separate, DC microgrids for habitation, mining, and fuel processing. This in-place use of power resources is called in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). These microgrids are to be separated by 9-12 km and each contains a photovoltaic (PV) source, energy storage systems (ESS), and a variety of loads, separated by level of criticality in operation. The separate microgrids need to be able to transfer power between themselves in cases where there are generation shortfall, faults, or other failures in order to keep more critical loads running and ensure safety of personnel and the success of mission goals. In this work, a 2 grid microgrid system is analyzed involving a habitation unit and a mining unit separated by a tie line.

Modular Multilevel GaN Based Ultra-High Power Density Electric Power Conversion and Transmission on the Lunar Surface

NASA’s Watts on the Moon Challenge is seeking solutions to transfer at least 1.065 kW power from a 120 V dc source to a 24-32 V dc load over a 3-km distance under the same environmental conditions as the Lunar surface (i.e., 77 K temperature and 1 mTorr pressure). The selected solution from the author’s team proposed utilizing two modular multilevel Gallium Nitride (GaN) based isolated dc-dc converters to connect the 120 V dc source with the 24-32 V dc load bank via 1.5 kV rated dc transmission lines. The modular multilevel converters feature frequency multiplication, high step-down voltage ratio and low device voltage stress. In the converters, GaN gate injection transistor (GaN GIT) and GaN High-Electron-Mobility Transistor (GaN HEMT) devices are chosen as switching devices, due to the merits of lower power loss, radiation hardness and ability to work under cryogenic and vacuum conditions.

Hybrid electric aircraft propulsion is an emerging technology that presents a variety of potential benefits along with technical integration challenges. Developing these new propulsion architectures with their complex control systems, and ultimately proving their benefit, is a multistep process. This process includes concept development and analysis, dynamic simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, full-scale testing, and so on. This effort is being revolutionized and indeed enabled by new digital tools that support increasing the technology readiness level throughout the maturation process. As part of this Digital Transformation, NASA has developed a suite of publicly available digital tools that facilitate the path from concept to implementation. This paper describes the NASA-developed tools and puts them in the context of control system development for hybrid electric aircraft propulsion.

G-31 technical committee of SAE International responsible for electronic transactions for aerospace has published AIR 7356 [1] entitled Opportunities, Challenges and Requirements for use of Blockchain in Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operating below 400ft above ground level for Commercial Use. Three-Layered Design, Protection & Control of Lunar DC Microgrids Utilizing WBG-Based Flexible DC Energy Router

The reliable operation of power systems on the lunar surface is crucial for critical research activities and supporting life. These systems are standalone or interconnected grids that integrate intermittent power sources and distributed energy storage. Lunar microgrids must be highly reliable, reconfigurable, and efficient. To meet these requirements, we propose the flexible DC energy router (FeDER), a modular and scalable power management unit for interconnected lunar DC microgrids. The FeDER integrates local energy storage and addresses various microgrid power management needs such as fault management, stability enhancement, power flow regulation, and power quality improvement. The lunar DC microgrids' design, protection, and control are achieved using a three-layered approach: (1) graph theory, (2) energy management system, and (3) smart resistor control. The lunar power grid architecture is introduced and the FeDER stability enhancement is implemented in the OPAL-RT platform.

Conversion of a Small Size Passenger Car to Hydrogen Fueling: Focus on Vehicle Dynamics and ECU Remapping Requirements

Converting spark ignition (SI) engines to H2 fueling is an attractive route for achieving zero carbon transportation and solving the legacy fleet problem in a future scenario in which electric powertrains will dominate. The current paper looks at a small size passenger car in terms of vehicle dynamics and electronic control unit (ECU) remapping requirements, in the hypothesis of using H2 as a gasoline replacement. One major issue with the use of H2 in port fuel injection (PFI) engines is that it causes reduced volumetric efficiency and thus low power. The vehicle considered for the study features turbocharging and therefore complete or partial recuperation of lost power is possible. Other specific requirements such as injection phasing were also under scrutiny, especially as PFI was hypothesized to maximize cost effectiveness. A 0D/1D model was used for simulating engine running characteristics as well as vehicle dynamics.

In the last decades, the requirement related to the reduction of energy waste has been focused on the aeronautical field for decreasing CO2 emissions in propulsion systems, coupled with the possibility of improving their ecological sustainability. Performance of hybrid electric aircraft are affected by the sizes and weights of propulsion systems typically constituted of internal combustion engines and electric motors. Therefore, the correct design of propulsive architectures is fundamental to ensure a desired state of charge target level of batteries compliant with the flight plan provided by a driver unit. A Linear Time Variant Model Predictive Control (LTV-MPC) strategy for energy management purposes of an aeronautical hybrid powertrain is proposed in the present work.
