Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation of Collaborative Air Traffic Flow Management using Brahms

The air traffic demand on the US national airspace frequently exceeds its available capacity. In current operations, the Air Traffic Service Provider designs and implements air traffic management initiatives with minimal interaction with the airlines. NASA and its partners have developed a new collaborative air traffic flow management concept of operations that involves the users of the airspace to a greater degree. In this paper, we describe an agent-based simulation of the new concept of operations and our planned experimentation to determine if the new concept of operations will lead to better utilization of the national airspace.

The Effect of Machining–Induced Micro Texture on Lightning Current Arcing between Fasteners and Composite Structure

Drilling fastener holes in composite is much more difficult than in aluminum or other metallic materials since individual carbon fibers fracture at irregular angles resulting in numerous microscopic voids. These voids can trap excess sealant inhibiting the intimate electrical contact between the fastener and the composite structure. As the cutting tool wears there is an increase of surface chipping and an increase in the amount of uncut fibers or resin. This condition is referred to as machining–induced micro texture. Machining–induced micro texture has been shown to be associated with the presence of arcing between the fastener and the composite structure during lightning strike tests. Lightning protection of composite structure is more complex due to the intrinsic high resistance of carbon fibers and epoxy, the multi-layer construction and the anisotropic nature of the structure.

The Potential for Fibre Alignment in the Manufacture of Polymer Composites from Recycled Carbon Fibre

This paper studies the feasibility and potential benefits of aligning recycled carbon fibres, in the form of short individual filaments, to manufacture fibre reinforced polymer composites. A review of fibre alignment processes is presented to provide insight into the different alignment technologies. The main focus is on wet hydrodynamic processes, which offer a high degree of alignment for discontinuous fibres. The process parameters that govern the alignment efficiency are also reported. The effect of alignment on fibre packing efficiency in the manufacture of composites is included, together with a report of preliminary fibre alignment results obtained from three different alignment processes.

Proof-Based Engineering of Real-Time Applications: An RTEdge™ Case Study

Edgewater's RTEdge™ Platform toolset is a model driven development environment for mission critical real-time systems. Using precise execution semantics and mathematical proof-based analysis, RTEdge™ enables the verification of critical properties of systems with high assurance. This case study will follow the design and implementation life-cycle of a system representing a real-world, mission critical domain: airborne electronic warfare. Using examples and constraints taken from this system, software components will be built to illustrate the principles of architectural conformance, timeliness and testing as executed within a static analysis framework. Using RTEdge™ as an example, this case study will introduce the concepts of model driven development in software and demonstrate how static analysis can be used to verify characteristics of a system that are traditionally left for later stages of development.

Sustainable Manufacturing Analysis using an Activity Based Object Oriented Method

This article begins by describing the need for a new method and tool for performing a sustainability assessment for manufacturing processes and systems. A brief literature survey is done to highlight the major existing methods and tools, their function, and their shortcomings. The article goes on to describe the general approach of the method before describing a computer aided tool that has been developed to implement the method. The article concludes with a walk through of a generic use case that describes where such a method would be useful and how such a tool would be implemented.

Characterization of the Tau Parallel Kinematic Machine for Aerospace Application

A consortium of interested parties has conducted an experimental characterization of two Tau parallel kinematic machines which were built as a part of the EU-funded project, SMErobot1. Characteristics such as machine stiffness, work envelope, repeatability and accuracy were considered. This paper will present a brief history of the Tau parallel machine, the results of this testing and some comment on prospective application to the aerospace industry.

Recent Advances Towards an Integrated and Optimized Design of High Lift Actuation Systems

For actuation of high lift surfaces in modern airplanes, complex mechanical shaft transmission systems powered by central drive units are deployed. The design of mechanical actuation systems, which have a major share in the weight of secondary flight controls, is a complex and challenging engineering task. Especially for specification of essential component and system design parameters within the preliminary design phase, engineering skill and experience are of significant importance owing to many uncertainties in component data and boundary conditions. Extensive trade-offs, as well as an evaluation of the system requirements and constraints lead to an iterative and time-consuming design process. Utilizing an integrated design assistance tool, mathematical functions and constraints can be modeled on system and component level and formalized as a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). Thus, automated consistency checking and pruning of the solution space can be achieved.

Evaluation of the Use of a Head Worn Display (HWD) for Flight Support in the Commercial Flight Deck

This study compared the performance of pilots flying a series of approach and landings under each of three conditions: using standard 737-NG flight deck displays only, using those displays with an optical head up display (HUD), and using those displays with a head worn display (HWD) depicting the same symbology as the HUD. Display condition had no effect on pilots' normal landing flight profiles or successful avoidance of a runway incursion. However, pilots reported decreased situation awareness and increased perceived workload when using the HWD as compared to the other two conditions. Pilot comments suggested that the poorer ratings for HWD were attributed to physical characteristics of the hardware and noticeable head-tracking latency. The results indicate that while the HWD technology still needs more refinement, the near-to-eye display concept is a viable alternative to a HUD.

If Design of Experiments (DOE) is so good why isn't it used more? Despite its power DOE has some demanding conditions. You don't have to be a statistician to conduct a successful DOE, however. In Aerospace we are very often faced with the design, improvement or correction of a product, process or service. The most serious task is determination of the most relevant variables or factors that affect the final result or performance of the process or product in question. Once these factors have been established, we then need to determine an optimal combination of settings or levels for each factor. There is also the complicating possibility of interaction among the factors also. Design of Experiments (DOE) is an established statistical technique used on its own or in conjunction with a Six Sigma project to determine the strongest individual factors and if there is interaction among the factors.

Flying Test Bed Performance Testing of High-Bypass-Ratio Turbofans

The commercial turbofan trend of increasing bypass ratio and decreasing fan pressure ratio has seen its latest market entry in Pratt & Whitney's PurePower™ product line, which will power regional aircraft for the Bombardier and Mitsubishi corporations, starting in 2013. The high-bypass-ratio, low-fan-pressure-ratio trend, which is aimed at diminishing noise while increasing propulsive efficiency, combines with contemporary business factors including the escalating cost of testing and limited availability of simulated altitude test sites to pose formidable challenges for engine certification and performance validation. Most fundamentally, high bypass ratio and low fan pressure ratio drive increased gross-to-net thrust ratio and decreased fan temperature rise, magnifying by a factor of two or more the sensitivity of in-flight thrust and low spool efficiency to errors of measurement and assumption, i.e., physical modeling.

Data Mining and Complex Problems: Case Study in Composite Materials

Data mining is defined as the discovery of useful, possibly unexpected, patterns and relationships in data using statistical and non-statistical techniques in order to develop schemes for decision and policy making. Data mining can be used to discover the sources and causes of problems in complex systems. In addition, data mining can support simulation strategies by finding the different constants and parameters to be used in the development of simulation models. This paper introduces a framework for data mining and its application to complex problems. To further explain some of the concepts outlined in this paper, the potential application to the NASA Shuttle Reinforced Carbon-Carbon structures and genetic programming is used as an illustration.

Time and Cost Reduction in Evaluation Processes for New Parameters in Manufacturing Processes

Once qualified, manufacturing processes for safety critical components in aero engines are “frozen”, that is no changes are permitted to be made without a time consuming and costly re-validation. Moreover, the material selection for components in modern aero engines, due to high mechanical and thermal loads in operation, is limited to a small range of super alloys. These difficult to machine titanium and nickel based alloys are on the one hand a significant expense factor themselves, and cause considerable costs due to high tool wear on the other hand. Thus, it is intended to carry out time and resource saving experiments and - ideally - being able to transfer available results to similar processes. Using smart experimental design deploying relationships of physical measures involved, the effort of testing can be reduced. This paper explains the method's mathematical background, how the selection of the regarded parameters is carried out as well as the reduction of system inputs.

Applying Poincaré Plots for Evaluating the Health State of Aircraft Generators

This paper explores the use of Poincaré plots to study signal variability of Navy P-3 aircraft generators. The method, which was inspired from nonlinear dynamics for analyzing interval sequences, is a technique used to plot each interval against the subsequent interval of the signal from different points of view. The geometry of the plots reveals salient features among new, low-usage, and high-usage generators. In addition to its simple visual interpretation, quantitative descriptors were explored to assess the degree of degradation of the overall system health state. The results suggest that accurate health state predictions can be achieved if baseline data can be collected.

Advanced Electrical Signature Analysis of Aircraft Electrical Generators

The electrical and mechanical failures (such as bearing and winding failures) combine to cause premature failures of the generators, which become a flight safety issue forcing the crew to land as soon as practical. Currently, diagnostic / prognostic technologies are not implemented for aircraft generators where repairs are time consuming and its costs are high. This paper presents the development of feature extraction and diagnostic algorithms to ultimately 1) differentiate between these failure modes and normal aircraft operational modes; and 2) determine the degree of damage of a generator. Electrical signature analysis based features were developed to distinguish between healthy and degraded generators while taking into account their operating conditions. The diagnostic algorithms were developed to have a high fault / high-hour detection rate along with a low false alarm rate.

Managing Aircraft Simulation Requirements with Content-Based Image Retrieval

Requirements analysis for aircraft simulators is often driven by photographs and videos of the actual aircraft. An engineer may gather and organize hundreds or even thousands of source photos of various instruments and devices unique to the aircraft. Managing all of this source information and referencing it to generate software requirements can be challenging and time-consuming. This paper explores Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) techniques to automatically process and search those images to generate basic requirements and to facilitate reuse. An unsupervised clustering algorithm groups source images based on minimal user input. Images processed in this way can also be queried by image similarity, thereby allowing project managers to find common source material among projects. The effectiveness of these techniques is demonstrated on an example cockpit.

N-Dimensional Market Maps

This paper proposes that the law of value and demand better characterizes market activity than the law of supply and demand. The law of value and demand states that attributes determine value; value determines price; and that price determines demand. This mandates four-dimensional systems for all markets. The simultaneous analysis of four disparate markets reveals a statistically significant geometric system in 13 dimensions. This forms the framework for an n-dimensional model of the global economy, first revealed in this paper. The conclusion is that this law satisfactorily explains many economic phenomena that the law of supply and demand cannot.

Improving Cabin Thermal Comfort by Controlling Equivalent Temperature

An aircraft environmental control system (ECS) is commonly designed for a cabin that has been divided into several thermal control zones; each zone has an air flow network that pulls cabin air over an isolated thermocouple. This single point measurement is used by the ECS to control the air temperature and hence the thermal environment for each zone. The thermal environment of a confined space subjected to asymmetric thermal loads can be more fully characterized, and subsequently better controlled, by determining its “equivalent temperature.” This paper describes methodology for measuring and controlling cabin equivalent temperature. The merits of controlling a cabin thermal zone based on its equivalent temperature are demonstrated by comparing thermal comfort, as predicted by a “virtual thermal manikin,” for both air-temperature and equivalent-temperature control strategies.

Beyond Identification – High Memory RFID in Aviation

The RFID on Parts Project Team has recently completed and approved Spec 2000 Chapter 9, “RFID on Parts”. Once approved by the ATA e-Business Steering Group, this standard will allow for archiving and sharing part history information directly on RFID tags using the User Memory Bank. Using a structure similar to a File Storage System, this standard organizes tag data in a structured and indexed system so that information can be shared among all members of the supply chain. Now that high memory, passive tags are becoming available, when used in conjunction with the “RFID on Parts” standard, they make it possible to tag parts not just with an identification number, but with birth records, a full history of maintenance activities and user archives. Since end users and maintenance organizations will no longer need to rely solely on information retrieved from a centralized database, new processes and efficiencies can be realized.

Modeling of Fastener Kitting Logistics for Boeing Wide Body Airplanes

At Boeing’s commercial aircraft production in Everett Washington, the organization that supplies parts to the factory floor (known internally as Company 625) is revising their methods. A new process will deliver parts in kits that correspond to the installation plans used by the mechanics. Several alternative methods are under review. The authors used simulation methods to evaluate and compare these alternatives. This study focuses on the category of parts known as standard fasteners (‘standards’). Through direct observation, interviews with experts, as well as time and motion study, the process flow of the kitting operation was mapped A simulation model was created using the simulation software ARENA to examine two scenarios: the current kitting operation in the factory cribs and the proposed centralization of kitting operation in the Company 625.
