Characteristics and Effects of Lubricant Additive Chemistry on Ash Properties Impacting Diesel Particulate Filter Service Life

Ash accumulation in diesel particulate filters, mostly from essential lubricant additives, decreases the filter's soot storage capacity, adversely affects fuel economy, and negatively impacts the filter's service life. While the adverse effects of ash accumulation on DPF performance are well known, the underlying mechanisms controlling these effects are not. To address these issues, results of detailed measurements with specially formulated lubricants, correlating ash properties to individual lubricant additives and their effects on DPF pressure drop, are presented. Investigations using the specially-formulated lubricants showed ash consisting primarily of calcium sulfates to exhibit significantly increased flow resistance as opposed to ash primarily composed of zinc phosphates. Furthermore, ash accumulated along the filer walls was found to be packed approximately 25% denser than ash accumulated in the channel end-plugs.

Assessment of Various Environmental Thermal Loads on Passenger Thermal Comfort

Virtual simulation of passenger compartment climatic conditions is becoming increasingly important as a complement to the wind tunnel and field testing to achieve improved thermal comfort while reducing the vehicle development time and cost. The vehicle cabin is subjected to various thermal environments. At the same time many of the design parameters are dependent on each other and the relationship among them is quite complex. Therefore, an experimental parametric study is very time consuming. The present 3-D RadTherm analysis coupled with the 3-D CFD flow field analysis takes into account the geometrical configuration of the passenger compartment which includes glazing surfaces and pertinent physical and thermal properties of the enclosure with particular emphasis on the glass properties. Virtual Thermal Comfort Engineering (VTCE) is a process that takes into account the cabin thermal environment coupled with a human physiology model.

Project Omnivore: A Variable Compression Ratio ATAC 2-Stroke Engine for Ultra-Wide-Range HCCI Operation on a Variety of Fuels

The paper describes the principal features of Omnivore, a spark-ignition-based research engine designed to investigate the possibility of true wide-range HCCI operation on a variety of fossil and renewable liquid fuels. The engine project is part-funded jointly by the United Kingdom's Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department of the Environment of Northern Ireland (DoENI). The engineering team includes Lotus Engineering, Jaguar Cars, Orbital Corporation and Queen's University Belfast. The research engine so far constructed is of a typical automotive cylinder capacity and operates on an externally-scavenged version of the two-port Day 2-stroke cycle, utilising both a variable charge trapping mechanism to control both trapped charge and residual concentration and a wide-range variable compression ratio (VCR) mechanism in the cylinder head.

Experimental Investigation of a Control Method for SI-HCCI-SI Transition in a Multi-Cylinder Gasoline Engine

In HCCI engines, the Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR) and Residual Gas Fraction (RGF) are difficult to control during the SI-HCCI-SI transition, and this may result in incomplete combustion and/or high pressure raise rates. As a result, there may be undesirably high engine load fluctuations. The objectives of this work are to further understand this process and develop control methods to minimize these load fluctuations. This paper presents data on instantaneous AFR and RGF measurements, both taken by novel experimental techniques. The data provides an insight into the cyclic AFR and RGF fluctuations during the switch. These results suggest that the relatively slow change in the intake Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) and actuation time of the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) are the main causes of undesired AFR and RGF fluctuations, and hence an unacceptable Net IMEP (NIMEP) fluctuation. We also found large cylinder-to-cylinder AFR variations during the transition.

Impact of Energy Management on the NPV Gasoline Savings of PHEVs

This paper evaluates the impact of energy management strategy on the cost benefits of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) by taking into account the impact of PHEV energy management on battery life and petroleum displacement over the life of the vehicle. Using Battery in the Loop (BIL), a real battery is subjected to transient power demands by a virtual vehicle. The vehicle energy management strategy is varied, resulting in different battery utilization scenarios. Battery life, which varies with battery utilization, is estimated for the different energy management scenarios. The same representative drive cycle is used over the different energy management strategies to isolate the impact of energy management on battery utilization. PHEV gasoline savings, in comparison to a charge sustaining hybrid, are calculated for each of the energy management strategies, for a fixed distance of 40 miles.

Optimizing the Transient of an SI-Engine Equipped with Variable Cam Timing and Variable Turbine

As the engines of today decrease in displacement with unchanged power output, focus of today's research is on transient response. The trend of today is to use a turbocharger with high boost level. For SI-engines a regular WG-turbocharger has been used, but in the future, when the boost level increases together with higher demand on the transient response, a Variable Nozzle Turbine (VNT) will be used together with Variable Valve Timing (VVT). As the degree of freedom increases, the control strategies during a transient load step will be more difficult to develop. A 1D simulation experiment has been conducted in GT-Power where the transient simulation was “frozen” at certain time steps. The data from these time steps was put in a stationary simulation and the excessive energy was then bled off to obtain the same conditions for the engine in the stationary simulation as if the engine where in the middle of the transient.

Development and Optimization of Intermediate Lock Position Camshaft Phaser System

Intake camshaft retard beyond that necessary for reliable cold start-ability is shown to improve part-load fuel economy. By retarding the intake camshaft timing, engine pumping losses can be reduced and fuel economy significantly improved. At high engine speeds, additional intake cam retard may also improve full-load torque and power. To achieve these benefits, an intake camshaft phaser with intermediate lock pin position (ILP) and increased phaser authority was developed. ILP is necessary to reliably start at the intermediate phase position for cold temperatures, while providing increased phaser retard under warm conditions. The phaser also provides sufficient intake advance to maximize low-speed torque and provides good scavenging for boosted engine applications. Design and development of the intermediate locking phaser system is described. The pros and cons of various methods of accomplishing locking and unlocking a phaser are illustrated.

Virtual Check Valve Control for Improved Energy Conservation and Phasing Performance

This paper describes an enhanced application of variable cam timing (VCT) systems for improved conservation of energy and phase rate performance at high temperature and low RPM conditions. This virtual check valve control is demonstrated to provide faster phase rate at high temperature and low RPM conditions than either conventional VCT systems, or those using mechanical check valves. It offers expanded temperature and RPM operating range and further removes VCT systems from imposing burden on fuel-economy-sensitive oil pump systems. The virtual check valve concept is demonstrated in simulation. An ECU control is implemented and tested on a V6 engine.

Model Predictive Control: A Unified Approach for Urea-Based SCR Systems

Despite the fact that urea-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx is a key technology for achieving on- and off-highway diesel emission standards, significant control challenges remain. Transient operation, combined with dramatic changes in catalyst dynamics over the operating range, cause highly nonlinear system behavior. Moreover, these effects depend on catalyst formulation and new catalysts continue to be developed. With many controllers, any difference in catalyst formulation, converter size, and engine emissions calibration require control system re-tuning. To minimize control development effort, this paper presents a novel “generic” controller for SCR systems. Control action is grounded in a physics-based, nonlinear, embedded model. Through the model, controller parameters are adjusted a priori for catalyst formulation and converter size. The few remaining tuning levers are quite intuitive, and require no special knowledge of controls theory.

A Simulation Method to Guide DISI Engine Redesign for Increased Efficiency using Alcohol Fuel Blends

A turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine designed for use with gasoline is simulated using one dimensional engine simulation. Engine design modifications - increased compression ratio, 2-step valve train with dual independent cam phasing and fuel injection timing - are considered in an effort to improve fuel economy with gasoline and take advantage of properties of ethanol fuel blends (up to E85). This paper discusses a methodology to use the simulation to quantitatively evaluate the design modification effects on fuel economy. Fuel consumption predictions from the simulation for each design are evaluated. The goal is to identify the best design with the constraints of hardware physical limitations, engine residual tolerance and knock tolerance. The result yields a specification for a 2-step valve train design and phasing requirements that can improve fuel economy for each compression ratio design.

Comparative Investigation of Throttle-free Load Control on a 2.0 l Four Cylinder Turbocharged Gasoline Engine with Port and Direct Fuel Injection

A 2.0 l turbocharged gasoline engine with port injection and a comparable turbocharged gasoline engine with direct injection have been investigated on a test bench at Kaiserslautern Technical University. Both engines were driven with throttle-free load control by fully mechanically variable valve actuation (CVVL). The basic series-production turbocharged engine in this comparison is the version with direct injection without the fully variable valve train. The focuses of the fired tests were investigation of the fuel consumption at part load and of maximum torque behavior at low engine speeds at full load. In both engine modes, use of fully variable valve actuation shows improvements compared with the turbocharged engine versions without CVVL. Better turbocharger response enabled the torque behavior to be optimized.

Why Cu- and Fe-Zeolite SCR Catalysts Behave Differently At Low Temperatures

Cu- and Fe-zeolite SCR catalysts emerged in recent years as the primary candidates for meeting the increasingly stringent lean exhaust emission regulations, due to their outstanding activity and durability characteristics. It is commonly known that Cu-zeolite catalysts possess superior activity to Fe-zeolites, in particular at low temperatures and sub-optimal NO₂/NOx ratios. In this work, we elucidate some underlying mechanistic differences between these two classes of catalysts, first based on their NO oxidation abilities, and then based on the relative properties of the two types of exchanged metal sites. Finally, by using the ammonia coverage-dependent NOx performance, we illustrate that state-of-the-art Fe-zeolites can perform better under certain transient conditions than in steady-state.

Dynamic Analysis of the Audi Valvelift System

Fully variable valve trains provide comprehensive means of adjustment in terms of variable valve timing and valve lift. The efficiency of the engine is improved in the operating range and in return, an increasing complexness of the mechanical design and control engineering must be handled. For optimization and design of these kinds of complex systems, detailed simulation models covering different physical domains, i.e. mechanics, hydraulics, electrodynamics and control are needed. Topic of this work is the variable valve train named Audi valvelift system (AVS) e.g. used in the Audi 2.8l V6 FSI engine. The idea of AVS is to use different cam lobes at different operating points. Each intake valve can be actuated by a large and a small cam. For full load, the two inlet valves are opened by the large cam profile - ideal for high charge volumes and flow speeds in the combustion chamber. Under partial load, the small cam profiles are used.

The Suspension System of the 2009 Cooper Union FSAE Vehicle: A Comprehensive Design Review

This work details the process employed to design the 2009 Cooper Union FSAE® suspension system, spanning the overarching design philosophy, configuration selection, analysis, fabrication, and implementation, while offering recommendations to those especially new to the field. The design methodology illustrated here provides a systematic approach to suspension geometry, material selection, packaging, and construction. Though this paper serves as a starting point for FSAE® suspension designers, it provides a succinct overview for those interested in general suspension design fundamentals. The design process began with the selection of a suspension configuration, geometries, and kinematics, which were driven in part by tire data, desired bulk vehicle dynamics characteristics, and overall geometric variability. The springs and adjustable dampers were then selected as the front and rear anti-roll bar properties were concurrently designed.

Modeling and Analysis of Valve Train, Part I - Conventional Systems

In recent years, computer simulations gained an increased role in the design, development, optimization, and calibration of the valve train systems. With the development of non-conventional systems and actuation mechanisms, computer modeling became even more important. Part I of this article presents an overview of the current modeling and simulation methods of conventional valve trains at component and system level. First, the modeling of the valve train kinematics, including cam shape design and optimization, is summarized. Mathematical modeling of the valve spring, hydraulic lash adjuster, oil aeration, bulk modulus, contact stiffness and contact damping in multibody systems are discussed. The benefits and limitations of the different modeling approaches of the valve train dynamics are pointed out. Another important aspect is the valve train tribology.

Potential of Cellulose-Derived Biofuels for Soot Free Diesel Combustion

Today's biofuels require large amounts of energy in the production process for the conversion from biomass into fuels with conventional properties. To reduce the amounts of energy needed, future fuels derived from biomass will have a molecular structure which is more similar to the respective feedstock. Butyl levulinate can be gained easily from levulinic acid which is produced by acid hydrolysis of cellulose. Thus, the Institute for Combustion Engines at RWTH Aachen University carried out a fuel investigation program to explore the potential of this biofuel compound, as a candidate for future compression ignition engines to reduce engine-out emissions while maintaining engine efficiency and an acceptable noise level. Previous investigations identified most desirable fuel properties like a reduced cetane number, an increased amount of oxygen content and a low boiling temperature for compression ignition engine conditions.

Ethanol Autoignition Characteristics and HCCI Performance for Wide Ranges of Engine Speed, Load and Boost

The characteristics of ethanol autoignition and the associated HCCI performance are examined in this work. The experiments were conducted over wide ranges of engine speed, load and intake boost pressure (Piⁿ) in a single-cylinder HCCI research engine (0.98 liters) with a CR = 14 piston. The data show that pure ethanol is a true single-stage ignition fuel. It does not exhibit low-temperature heat release (LTHR), not even for boosted operation. This makes ethanol uniquely different from conventional distillate fuels and offers several benefits: a) The intake temperature (Tiⁿ) does not have to be adjusted much with changes of engine speed, load and intake boost pressure. b) High Piⁿ can be tolerated without running out of control authority because of an excessively low Tiⁿ requirement. However, by maintaining true single-stage ignition characteristics, ethanol also shows a relatively low temperature-rise rate just prior to its hot ignition point.

Utilization of Agricultural By-Products as Fillers and Reinforcements in ABS

Lignocellulosic agricultural by-products can be utilized for an array of biocomposite material applications. Biocomposite properties can approach those of synthetic conventional composites. They are highly suitable for automotive applications, where the thrust is toward fuel economy, weight-reduction, and higher renewability. A common automotive polymer for biocomposite application is alloyed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), whose extensive usage can be attributed to its exceptional balance of properties. However, the low sustainability of ABS in environmental degradation entails the addition of fillers. In this study, the UV blocking properties of lignin component of natural fibers will be analyzed for their use as additives in a natural ABS grade and will be compared to an ABS grade compounded with a traditional UV inhibitor.

Lean Design for Integrated Product Realization

Implementing the lean principles and tools in manufacturing has been successful in many companies. This success has led to different implementations, of these principles, in other organizational activities such as design and management. While these implementations can produce some improvements, the segmentation of the product development processes in most company limits the potential for achieving the desired goals and in some cases the success of the implementation process itself. In other words, full success of lean principles implementation cannot be achieved when applied to isolated segments of the product development process. This paper addresses lean design, in the context of a fully integrated product realization process. The paper discusses the integrated nature of any product realization process and its flow from concept to production.

Materials Testing for Finite Element Tire Model

The use of accurate tire material properties is a major requirement for conducting a successful tire analysis using finite element method (FEM). Obtaining these material properties however poses a major challenge for tire modelers and researchers due to the complex nature of tire material and associated proprietary protections of constituent material properties by tire manufactures. In view of this limitation, a simple and effective procedure for generating tire materials data used in tire finite element analysis (FEA) is presented in this paper. All the tire test specimens were extracted from a tire product based on special considerations such as specimen dimension and shape, test standard, precondition of specimen and test condition for cords. The required material properties of tire rubber component, including hyperelasticity and viscoelasticity were obtained using simple uni-axial tension test.
