Passengers vs. Battery: Calculation of Cooling Requirements in a PHEV

The power demand of air conditioning in PHEVs is known to have a significant impact on the vehicle’s fuel economy and performance. Besides the cooling power associated to the passenger cabin, in many PHEVs, the air conditioning system provides power to cool the high voltage battery. Calculating the cooling power demands of the cabin and battery and their impact on the vehicle performance can help with developing optimum system design and energy management strategies. In this paper, a representative vehicle model is used to calculate these cooling requirements over a 24-hour duty cycle. A number of pre-cooling and after-run cooling strategies are studied and effect of each strategy on the performance of the vehicle including, energy efficiency, battery degradation and passenger thermal comfort are calculated. Results show that after-run cooling of the battery should be considered as it can lead to significant reductions in battery degradation.

SUV Solar Roof with Photo-Thermal Effect for Ventilation ORC System

The Organic Rankine Cycle System (ORC) is an effective means to use the solar energy. The system adopts the solar energy on the car roof as the heat source to make the ORC work and drive the thermoelectric air-conditioner. It can improve the entering comfort on the parking condition and the vehicle energy utilization efficiency. In this research, the system comprehensively applied the principle of sunshine concentration, heat collection and photo electricity. Then considering the working condition and performance features of ORC system, the car roof was designed to have a compact structure, through which the efficiency of the solar vehicle system could be improved. Firstly, the research analyzed the heat source temperature and the heat flux impact on the output power of the ORC system. After that, the performance of heat collection was identified according to the given thermoelectric air-condition’s power requirements.

The Analysis of Phase Separation in Vertical Headers of Microchannel HEs

This paper presents the experimental analysis of separation in vertical headers based on flow visualization. Two-phase separation phenomena inside the header is observed and quantified. Driving forces are analyzed to study the mechanisms for two-phase flow motion and flow regimes. Main tube of the header is made of clear PVC for visualization study. R-134a is used as the fluid of interest and the mass flux from the inlet pass is 55 kg/m2s - 195 kg/m2s. Potential ways to improve two-phase separation are discussed. A model is built to show how separation brings potential benefits to MAC heat exchangers by arranging the flow path.

Automated Assessment of E/E-Architecture Variants Using an Integrated Model- and Simulation-Based Approach

Due to the continuously increasing complexity of automotive electric/electronic architectures (EEAs), model-based systems engineering principles became state-of-the-art for designing such heterogeneous systems. However, current Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) as well as their system-design and analysis tools and frameworks for simulation-based analysis of EEA models often are not fully integrated in a single design process. They usually require error-prone import/export processes, especially when considering distributed collaboration, from EEA data models to external analysis frameworks and vice versa. Particularly, this limits the efficient assessment and comparison of distinct architecture variants regarding certain non-functional properties. Moreover, simulation-based analysis of the latter intended for EEA assessments in early concept phases demands backtracking capabilities to allow iterative model adaptations.

Test Methodology to Quantify and Analyze Energy Consumption of Connected and Automated Vehicles

A new generation of vehicle dynamics and powertrain control technologies are being developed to leverage information streams enabled via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) connectivity [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. While algorithms that use these connected information streams to enable improvements in energy efficiency are being studied in detail, methodologies to quantify and analyze these improvements on a vehicle have not yet been explored fully. A procedure to test and accurately measure energy-consumption benefits of a connected and automated vehicle (CAV) is presented. The first part of the test methodology enables testing in a controlled environment. A traffic simulator is built to model traffic flow in Fort Worth, Texas with sufficient accuracy. The benefits of a traffic simulator are two-fold: (1) generation of repeatable traffic scenarios and (2) evaluation of the robustness of control algorithms by introducing disturbances.

Sensor Selection for Selective Clutch Fault Isolation in Automatic Transmissions Based on Degree of Fault Tolerance

Multiple clutches are engaged to achieve a specific gear ratio in an automatic transmission (AT). When an engaged clutch loses pressure during the AT operation, it is classified as a clutch stuck off fault. Automatic transmissions can enter in neutral states because of these faults and the vehicle can lose power at the wheels. Our previous work describes a systematic way of performing sensor placement analysis for diagnosis of clutch faults in automatic transmissions. In this paper, we approach the issue from the point of view similar to that of functional safety according to the ISO 26262 standard; where a transmission functional safety concept should address transitioning to a safe state in case of hazards associated with stuck off clutches.

Intelligent Vehicle Monitoring for Safety and Security

The challenges posed by connected and autonomous vehicles fall beyond the scope of current version of ISO 26262. According to the current functional safety standard, controllability, largely affected by human intervention, is a large contributor to the definition of the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL). Since the driver involvement in CAVs will decrease in future, this gives no clear definition for future functional safety design. On the other hand, CAVs bring additional capabilities such as advance sensors, telematics-based connectivity etc. which can be used to devise efficient approaches to address functional safety (FuSa) challenges. The caveat to these additional capabilities is issues like cybersecurity, complexity, etc.

Coupling Safety Distance Model for Vehicle Active Collision Avoidance System

As an important part of the active collision avoidance system of the vehicle, the safety distance model determines the safety of the vehicle and the utilization of the road. The safety distance is too large to affect the traffic flow of the road. If it is too small, it will cause traffic accidents. Therefore, the design of the safety distance model depends on whether it can adapt to the complex and changing traffic environment, and effectively balance the safety of the driving process, the car following and the utilization of the road. According to the actual requirements of system security alarm and system false alarm reduction, three safety distance models and one constraint condition are established. The safety distance model maintained by the vehicle spacing, the safety distance model reflecting the characteristics of the driver, and the longitudinal minimum safety distance model when steering the lane change.

Research on the Model of Safety Boundary Condition Based on Vehicle Intersection Conflict and Collision

Because of the high frequency and serious consequences of traffic accidents in the intersection area, it is of great significance to study the vehicle conflict and collision scenarios of the intersection area. Due to few actual crash accidents occurring in naturalistic driving studies data or field operational tests data, the data of traffic accident database should be also used to analyze the intersection conflict and collision. According to the China Field Operation Test (China-FOT) database and the China in Depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database, the distribution feature of the respective intersection scenario type is obtained from the data analysis. Based on the intersection scenario type, two characters of intersection conflict and collision, the environmental character and the vehicle dynamic character, are used to analyze for the integration process of intersection conflict and collision.

A System Safety Perspective into Chevy Bolt’s One Pedal Driving

The Chevy Bolt’s One Pedal Driving feature is a new electrification propulsion enhancement that allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate and hold their vehicle stationary by just using the accelerator pedal. With this new feature, the driver is relieved of having to switch between pressing the accelerator pedal and brake pedal to slow, stop and hold the vehicle stationary. While this feature provides a convenience to the driver, it also presents a paradigm shift in driver engagement and control system responsibility for executing certain functions that the driver was traditionally responsible to perform. Various system safety techniques were involved in the development of such a feature both from a traditional functional safety perspective as well as a Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) perspective.

Numerical Simulations of Performance of Plate Fin Tube Heat Exchanger Using Rectangular Winglet Type Vortex Generator with Punched Holes

Heat transfer performance of fin-tube heat exchanger can be enhanced by using longitudinal vortex generators which produces longitudinal vortices. In the present work numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the heat transfer and flow resistance characteristics of rectangular winglet pair type vortex generators (VGs) with punched hole of circular shape (RWPH). RWPH have been placed in Common Flow Down (CFD) and Common Flow Up (CFU) configuration in downstream as well as upstream direction. Heat transfer characteristics and flow behavior have been compared for both the configurations i.e. CFD and CFU, in downstream as well as upstream using Colburn’s factor(j), friction factor(f) and performance evaluation criterion, R = (j/j0)/(f/f0)1/3. Simultaneously, Reynolds number have been varied from 1400 to 9000. The punched hole considerably improves the thermohydraulic performance of RWP and decreases the flow resistance due to reduction in face area.

Numerical Study of Single Bubble Nucleate Boiling Heat Transfer in Engine Cooling System

In the pursuit of extracting the most performance, engines are being continuously down sized and their power density continuously increased. This significantly increases the heat load on the engine for which the traditional cooling systems may not be sufficient. In the view of this fact; it is worth to explore controlled nucleate boiling to optimize engine cooling system designs. In order to utilize nucleate boiling in cooling systems, a detailed understanding of single bubble dynamics and its associated heat transfer is essential. In this work, a contact line evaporation model is developed which is then coupled to a conjugate surface to understand the individual contribution of micro layer and other sub processes towards overall heat transfer mechanism. The models use volume of fluid (VOF) interface capturing method and incorporates physics like contact line evaporation, transient conduction and bubble growth.

Robust Design on Adhesive Material and Bonding Process for Automotive Battery Pack

Adhesive bonding is a key technology for the lighter weight of battery pack trays using aluminum material. A robust design method of adhesive bonding with the required strength for battery pack structure after degradation was developed to minimize variability of strength under various noise conditions. The parameter design based on Taguchi methods determined the optimum adhesive condition of the bonding process. To guarantee strength after degradation, it is essential to select a robust adhesive material and to minimize the strength variation derived from the adhesive material. The functional evaluation, which includes experimental design method, determined adhesive material with the minimum strength variation among material candidates. Then, robustness of the adhesive material itself has been evaluated as the result of collaboration with the adhesive material supplier. This analysis was able to regulate the compound ratio of raw materials without reducing the adhesive strength.

A Methodology of Design for Fatigue Using an Accelerated Life Testing Approach with Saddlepoint Approximation

We present an Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) methodology along with a design for fatigue approach, using Gaussian or non-Gaussian excitations. The accuracy of fatigue life prediction at nominal loading conditions is affected by model and material uncertainty. This uncertainty is reduced by performing tests at a higher loading level, resulting in a reduction in test duration. Based on the data obtained from experiments, we formulate an optimization problem to calculate the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) values of the uncertain model parameters. In our proposed ALT method, we lift all the assumptions on the type of life distribution or the stress-life relationship and we use Saddlepoint Approximation (SPA) method to calculate the fatigue life Probability Density Functions (PDFs).

Estimates of the Convective Heat-Transfer Coefficients for Under-Hood and Under-Body Components

In this paper we investigate the application of time constant to estimate the external heat transfer coefficient (h) around specific vehicle components. Using this approach, a test sample in the form of a steel plate is placed around the component of interest. A step change is applied to air temperature surrounding the sample. The response of the sample temperature can be analyzed and the heat transfer coefficient can therefore be calculated. Several test samples were installed at several locations in the vehicle under-hood and underbody. A series of vehicle tests were designed to measure the time constant around each component at various vehicle speeds. A correlation between estimated heat transfer coefficients and vehicle speed was generated. The developed correlations and the measured component ambient temperatures can be readily used as input for thermal simulation tools. This approach can be very helpful whenever CFD resources may not be available.

Energy Consumption Optimization for the Electric Vehicle Air Conditioning Using the Condensate Water

In summer, the relatively low temperature water condenses in the evaporator when the vehicle air-conditioning (AC) is running. At present, the vehicle AC condensate water without well utilization is directly wasted. The condenser’s thermal transfer performance has a great influence on the AC performance, and to increase the convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) is the key to its design. In this paper, a method of using atomized condensate water (CW) to enhance the condenser’s thermal transfer performance is proposed, which can make the most of the CW's cold energy. It achieves the reuse of CW and increases the condenser’s CHTC. First, the CW flow calculation model in the evaporator and the calculation model of the condenser enhanced thermal transfer using atomized CW are both set up. The influence of the evaporation degree of atomized CW particles in the air on the enhancement effect is comprehensively considered.

This article discusses highly flexible and accurate physics-based mean value modeling (MVM) for internal combustion engines and its wide applicability towards virtual vehicle calibration. The requirement to fulfill the challenging Real Driving Emissions (RDE) standards has significantly increased the demand for precise engine models, especially models regarding pollutant emissions and fuel economy. This has led to a large increase in effort required for precise engine modeling and robust model calibration. Two best-practice engine modeling approaches will be introduced here to satisfy these requirements. These are the exclusive MVM approach, and a combination of MVM and a Design of Experiments (DOE) model for heterogeneous multi-domain engine systems.

A Novel Three Steps Composited Parameter Matching Method of an Electromagnetic Regenerative Suspension System

The electromagnetic regenerative suspension has attracted much attention recently due to its potential to improve ride comfort and handling stability, at the same time recover kinetic energy which is typically dissipated in traditional shock absorbers. The key components of a ball-screw regenerative suspension system are a motor, a ball screw and a nut. For this kind of regenerative suspension, its damping character is determined by the motor's torque-speed capacity, which is different from the damping character of the traditional shock absorber. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a systematic approach for the parameter matching of ball-screw regenerative suspension, so that the damping character provided by it can ensure ride comfort and handling stability. In this paper, a 2-DOF quarter vehicle simulation model with regenerative suspension is constructed. The effects of the inertia force on ride comfort and handling stability are analyzed.

Vibration Control of an Active Seat Suspension System Integrated Pregnant Woman Body Model

Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is effective, popular and cost effective for a lot of scientific and engineering applications. In this paper, PID and fuzzy-self-tuning PID (FSTPID) controllers are applied to improve the performance of an active seat suspension system to enhance the pregnant woman comfort. The equations of motion of thirteen-degrees-of-freedom (13-DOF) active seat suspension system incorporating pregnant woman body model are derived and simulated. PID gains are tuned and estimated using genetic algorithm (GA) to formulate GA PID controller. In FSTPID, fuzzy logic technique is used to tune PID controller gains by selecting appropriate fuzzy rules using Matlab/Simulink software. Both controlled active seat suspension systems are compared with a passive seat suspension. Suspension performance is evaluated under bump and random road excitations in order to verify the success of the proposed controllers.

Energy Management Optimization for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Real-World Driving Data

Excellent energy consumption performance of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is usually attributed to its hybrid drive mode. However, the factors including vehicle performance, driver behavior and traffic status have been shown to cause unsatisfactory performance. This phenomenon leads to a necessity of study on energy consumption control strategies under real-world driving conditions. This paper proposes a new approach for energy management optimization of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles based on real-world driving data for two purposes. One is for improving the energy consumption of PHEV under real-world driving conditions and the other is for reducing the computational complexity of optimization methods in simulation models. In this process, the paper collected real-world driving record data from 180 drivers within 6 months. Then the principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to extract and define the hidden factors from the initial real-world driving data.
