Passenger Car Serial Application of a Particulate Filter System on a Common Rail Direct Injection Diesel Engine

1 Although combustion system improvements allow extremely low level of particulate (EURO 4 particulate level is already achieved) the particulate filter appears to be the only solution to reduce solid particulate emission by two to three order of magnitude over the whole size range starting from 10 nm. This is the reason why an active particulate filter system has been developed. The major issue was to fill in the gap between particulate regeneration temperature (550°C) and the naturally low exhaust gas temperature of modern DI diesel engine (150°C to 200°C in city driving conditions). This low exhaust gas temperature is the result of overall efficiency improvement to reduce fuel consumption.

Shifting from Automatic to Continuously Variable Transmissions: A Look at Fluid Technology Requirements

New technologies are being commercialized across the automotive industry to address demands for improved fuel economy, emissions reductions, and improved customer satisfaction. Push-belt continuously variable transmissions (b-CVTs) are beginning to command a significant percentage of the market now dominated by manual and conventional automatic transmissions. In addition, automobile manufacturers plan to introduce the first traction drive toroidal-CVTs to the market place within the next five years. A review of the relative benefits and limitations of each of these automatic transmissions exists in the literature. In this paper we consider how the performance requirements of each of these automatic transmission systems impact automatic transmission fluid technology. The physical characteristics and screen test performance of two commercial ATFs, a b-CVTF, and two traction fluids were examined.

Studies on Carbon Canester to Satisfy LEVII EVAP Regulations

Recently, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has proposed a new set of evaporative emissions and “Useful Life” standards, called LEVII EVAP regulations, which are more stringent than those of the enhanced EVAP emissions regulations. If the new regulations are enforced, it will become increasingly important for the carbon canister to reduce Diurnal Breathing Loss (DBL) and to prevent deterioration of the canister. Therefore, careful studies have been made on the techniques to meet these regulations by clarifying the working capacity deterioration mechanism and the phenomenon of DBL in a carbon canister. It has been found that the deterioration of working capacity would occur if high boiling hydrocarbons, which are difficult to purge, fill up the micropores of the activated carbon, and Useful Life could be estimated more accurately according to the saturated adsorption mass of the activated carbon and the canister purge volume.

Infant and child anthropometry

Although over 800 references to child and infant anthropometry are in the literature, most have limited validity and application to current populations. Functional measures required by industry and government for federal safety standards for design of dummies, child products, furniture, or protective devices such as restraint systems have either been incomplete, inadequate, or nonexistent. Some of the limitations influencing validity of existing data have been outlined for the potential user. As a start toward obtaining necessary functional anthropometric data, The University of Michigan is currently conducting a study sponsored by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to obtain valid nationwide measurements on a representative U.S. population from birth to age 12 years. In this study some 41 measurements, including many functional measures, as well as seated and supine whole-body centers of gravity, are being taken utilizing a new automated anthropometric minicomputer system.

In-line Hydrocarbon (HC) Adsorber System for Reducing Cold-Start Emissions

An adsorber system for reducing cold-start hydrocarbon (HC) emissions has been developed combining existing catalyst technologies with a zeolite-based HC adsorber. The series flow in-line concept offers a passive and simplified alternative to other technologies by incorporating one additional adsorber substrate into existing converters without any additional valving, purging lines, secondary air, or special substrates. Major technical issues to be resolved for practical use of this system are 1) the ability to adsorb a wide range of HC molecular sizes in the cold exhaust gas and 2) the temperature difference between HC desorption from the adsorber and activation of the catalyst to convert desorbed HCs. This paper describes the current development status of hydrocarbon adsorber aftertreatment technologies. We report results obtained with a variety of adsorber properties, washcoat structures of adsorber catalyst and start-up and underfloor catalyst system combinations.

Adaptive Cruise Control System Using CVT Gear Ratio Control

This paper describes a newly developed adaptive cruise control (ACC) system using continuously variable transmission (CVT) gear ratio control. This system provides excellent headway distance control performance at a reasonable cost. With this system, headway distance is measured with a laser radar, and the throttle position and CVT gear ratio are controlled under both acceleration and deceleration situations. The new ACC system consists of a target headway distance calculator, a headway distance controller, a vehicle velocity controller and a drive torque controller. Using a drive torque control method that was newly developed based on integrated control of engine torque and the CVT gear ratio, the following benefits are obtained. (1) It provides smoother acceleration and deceleration. (2) It maintains the target vehicle velocity on steep uphill and downhill grades. As a result, sufficient ACC performance can be attained even in 2.0-liter class vehicles.

Fuel Permeation Study on Various Seal Materials

The advent of low emission regulations on fuel systems has made conventional sealing materials such as acry-lonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) unfit for sealing most fuel systems. Therefore, it is imperative to look beyond conventional rubbers and towards more exotic materials to seal such applications. In this study, the permeation characteristics and the change in physical properties of several elastomeric materials (NBR, hydrogenated NBR (HNBR), and fluorocarbon elastomers (FKM)) as well as various poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) composites were evaluated with four different fuel mixtures. The sealing materials were tested using vaporimeter cups. The results are discussed as a function of the materials' nature, composition, and filler content.

Contribution of Liquid Fuel to Hydrocarbon Emissions in Spark Ignition Engines

The purpose of this work was to develop an understanding of how liquid fuel transported into the cylinder of a port-fuel-injected gasoline-fueled SI engine contributes to hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. To simulate the liquid fuel flow from the valve seat region into the cylinder, a specially designed fuel probe was developed and used to inject controlled amounts of liquid fuel onto the port wall close to the valve seat. By operating the engine on pre-vaporized Indolene, and injecting a small amount of liquid fuel close to the valve seat while the intake valve was open, we examined the effects of liquid fuel entering the cylinder at different circumferential locations around the valve seat. Similar experiments were also carried out with closed valve injection of liquid fuel at the valve seat to assess the effects of residual blowback, and of evaporation from the intake valve and port surfaces.

Pushing the Envelope to Near-Zero Emissions on Light-duty Gasoline Vehicles

The integration of advanced emission control technologies including advanced three-way catalysts and advanced, high cell density, ultra-thin wall substrates with advanced gasoline powertrains and advanced engine controls is necessary to achieve near-zero tailpipe emission requirements like California's SULEV or PZEV light-duty certification categories. The first gasoline vehicles meeting these near-zero regulations have been introduced in California in 2001. Advanced three-way catalysts targeted for these near-zero regulations feature layered architectures, thermally stable oxygen storage components, and segregated precious metal impregnation strategies. Engine calibration strategies focused on tight stoichiometric air/fuel control and fast catalyst heat-up immediately after engine start are important enablers to achieve near-zero hydrocarbon and NOx emissions.

Advanced Emissions Test Site for Confident PZEV Measurements

As automakers begin to develop and certify vehicles that meet the California Air Resources Board LEV II and Environmental Protection Agency Tier II Regulations, emissions test cells must be designed and implemented that are capable of accurate low-level measurements. A new test cell has been installed at Ford Motor Company for use in testing vehicles that meet the stringent Partial Zero Emission Vehicle tailpipe requirements (NMOG = 10 mg/mile, NOx = 20 mg/mile). This test cell includes a redesigned Bag Mini-Diluter (BMD), improved analytical benches, an ultrasonic exhaust flow meter with an integrated tailpipe pressure control system, a conventional constant volume sampler (CVS), and a moveable electric dynamometer. The Bag Mini-Diluter will be used as the primary sampling system for the tailpipe measurements. The moveable electric dynamometer enables the test cell to be configured so that the vehicle is moved to the test equipment rather than moving the test equipment to the vehicle.

Studies on Enhanced CVS Technology to Achieve SULEV Certification

For the measurement of exhaust emissions, Constant Volume Sampling (CVS) technology is recommended by legislation and has proven its practical capability in the past. However, the introduction of new low emission standards has raised questions regarding the accuracy and variability of the CVS system when measuring very low emission levels. This paper will show that CVS has the potential to achieve sufficient precision for certification of SULEV concepts. Thus, there is no need for the introduction of new test methods involving high cost. An analysis of the CVS basic equations indicates the importance of the Dilution Factor (DF) for calculating true mass emissions. A test series will demonstrate that, by adjusting the dilution and using state of the art analyzers, the consistency of exhaust results is comparable with those of LEV concepts, measured with conventional CVS systems and former standard analyzers.

DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters) have been a primary technology utilized to purify diesel PM emissions. One of the major challenges of the DPF is to reduce pressure drop caused by PM and ash accumulation. This paper reports on the definition and investigative results of several major parameters which determine the pressure-drop of Cordierite and SiC (Silicon Carbide) DPF's. After which, the successful material development for low pressure-drop Cordierite and SiC DPF's are presented.

Kinematics, Injury Mechanisms and Design Considerations for Older Children in Adult Torso Belts

A gap in protection appears to exist for older children who have outgrown booster seats and are placed in some adult, 3-point belts with fixed shoulder belt anchorage points. Boys on average do not reach the 50th percentile adult, male seated height until age 15 ½ and the average girl never reaches this height. The published minimum seated height and weight thresholds for use of three-point belts alone are inconsistent with the official recommendations by The National Transportation Safety Board and the majority of state seat belt laws. A shoulder belt with a fixed upper anchorage, which is typical in the rear occupant space, may create torso belt routing that can allow rollout from the shoulder belt in frontal oblique collisions. A belt trajectory that passes across the neck of an older child may create an artificial fulcrum in the cervical spine resulting in quadriplegia. Excessive webbing lengths can promote child occupant excursion, rebound and injurious head contact.

Utilization of Advanced Three-Way Catalyst Formulations on Ceramic Ultra Thin Wall Substrates for Future Legislation

The LEV II and SULEV/PZEV emission standards legislated by the US EPA and the Californian ARB will require continuous reduction in the vehicles' emission over the next several years. Similar requirements are under discussion in the European Union (EU) in the EU Stage V program. These future emission standards will require a more efficient after treatment device that exhibits high activity and excellent durabilty over an extended lifetime. The present study summarizes the findings of a joint development program targeting such demanding future emission challenges, which can only be met by a close and intensive co-operation of the individual expert teams. The use of active systems, e.g. HC-adsorber or electrically heated light-off catalysts, was not considered in this study. The following parameters were investigated in detail: The development of a high-tech three-way catalyst technology is described being tailored for applications on ultra thin wall ceramic substrates (UTWS).

Development of Vapor Reducing Fuel Tank System

In succession to the world-first introduction of a mass production gasoline hybrid passenger car into the Japanese market in 1997, Toyota also has introduced an enhanced version of the above to the US and European markets in 2000. Upon introduction of Toyota Hybrid System (THS) into the US market, a drastic reduction of gasoline vapor evaporation from the fuel tank was necessary, in order to meet the most stringent exhaust emission (SULEV) and evaporative emission standards in the world. In order to meet this requirement, a fuel tank system named “Vapor Reducing Fuel Tank System” was developed. This is the first commercial application in the world to use a variable tank volume to drastically reduce gasoline vapor generation.

Development of the Automotive Exhaust Hydrocarbon Adsorbent

The hydrocarbon adsorption volume character of zeolite was studied. Specifically, the relationship between aluminum content and zeolite hydrocarbon adsorption was investigated, as a potential hydrocarbon adsorbent for exhaust gas. The study also analyzed the relationship between hole diameter and zeolite hydrocarbon adsorption. It was found that hydrocarbon adsorption increased with decreasing aluminum content. Zeolite with a pore size approximately 0.1nm greater than the diameter of hydrocarbon molecules showed the best performance. Zeolites with two different pore sizes were mixed, and succeeded in adsorbing hydrocarbons of carbon number 3 and above. Silver (Ag) ion exchanged zeolite was also used to increase the adsorption of exhaust gas hydrocarbons, including those of carbon number 2.

Thermal Durability of Wall-Flow Ceramic Diesel Particulate Filters

The maximum use temperature of a diesel particulate filter is often thought to be limited only by the melting point of the filter material itself. This paper suggests that the maximum practical use temperature for filters is limited not by the intrinsic filter melting temperature, but by the temperature at which the metal oxide ash collected from the engine exhaust sinters and adheres to the filter wall, or the temperature at which the filter undergoes eutectic melting by reaction with the ash. Ash sintering and adherence without reaction with the filter material may result in loss of filter permeability and a permanent pressure drop increase. Chemical reactions between the ash and the filter can result either in pinholes through the walls, which compromise filtration efficiency, or glazing on the surface of the walls, which increases back pressure.

Development of Anthropometric Specifications for the Six-Year-Old OCATD

Advanced airbag systems use information from a variety of sensors to tune the airbag performance for crash severity and occupant characteristics. A new family of Occupant Classification ATDs (OCATD) have been developed for use in the design and testing of advanced airbag systems. This paper describes the development of anthropometric standards for an OCATD that represents a typical six-year-old child. Detailed analyses of existing child anthropometry databases were conducted to develop reference dimensions. A child who closely matched the reference dimensions was measured in a variety of conditions. A custom molded measurement seat was constructed using foam-in-place seating material. The surface of the child's body was scanned as he sat in the custom seat, and the three-dimensional locations of body landmarks defining the skeleton position were recorded.

Feasibility Study of an Online Gasoline Fractionating System for use in Spark-Ignition Engines

A fuel fractionating system is designed and commissioned to separate standard gasoline fuel into two components by evaporation. The system is installed on a Ricardo E6 single cylinder research engine for testing purposes. Laboratory tests are carried out to determine the Research Octane Number (RON) and Motoring Octane Number (MON) of both fuel fractions. Further tests are carried out to characterize Spark-Ignition (SI) and Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI) combustion under borderline knock conditions, and these are related to results from some primary reference fuels. SI results indicate that an increase in compression ratio of up to 1.0 may be achieved, along with better charge ignitability if this system is used with a stratified charge combustion regime. CAI results show that the two fuels exhibit similar knock-resistances over a range of operating conditions.

Spark Ignition Engine Hydrocarbon Emissions Behaviors in Stopping and Restarting

Engine Hydrocarbon (HC) emissions behaviors in the shut down and re-start processes were examined in a production 4-cylinder 2.4 L engine. Depending on when the power to the ECU was cut off relative to the engine events, there could be two or three mis-fired cylinders (i.e. cylinders with fuel injected but no ignition). The total HC pumped out by the engine into the catalyst in the stopping process was ∼ 4 mg (approximately equaled to the amount of one injection at idle condition). Because the size of the catalyst was larger than the total exhaust volume in the stopping process, this HC was not observed at the catalyst exit. The catalyst temperature was also not affected. When the engine was purged after shut down (by cranking the engine with the injectors and ignition disconnected), the total exit HC was 33 mg. In a restart 90 minutes after shut down, the integrated amount of HC emissions due to residual fuel from the stopping process was 16 mg.
