Ride Comfort Enhancement of Railway Vehicles Using Magnetorheological Damper

The study investigates the ride comfort of a rail vehicle with semi-active suspension control and its effect on train vertical dynamics. The Harmony Search algorithm optimizes the gains of a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller using the self-adaptive global best harmony search method (SGHS) due to its effectiveness in reducing the tuning time and offering the least objective function value. Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are highly valuable semi-active devices for vibration control applications rather than active actuators in terms of reliability and implementation cost. A quarter-rail vehicle model consisting of six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software to evaluate the proposed controller's effectiveness. The simulated results show that the optimized PID significantly improves ride comfort compared to passive.

As a critical safety-related electronic and electrical system in automobile, electric power steering is very important and necessary to meet the requirements of functional safety. This paper introduces the main development activities of functional safety at software level. In order to realize the purpose of freedom from interference in memory, the safety mechanism of memory protection is proposed in software safety analysis. The memory protection is realized in AUTOSAR architecture by configuration.

Tire Force Estimation Using Intelligent Tire System Detecting Carcass Deformation

In this paper, an intelligent tire system is designed to estimate tire force by detecting the tire carcass deformation. The intelligent tire system includes a set of marker points on the inner liner of the tire to locate the position of tire carcass and a camera mounted on the rim to capture the position of these points under different driving conditions. An image recognition program is used to identify the coordinates of the marker points in order to determine the deformation of the tire carcass. According to the tire carcass stiffness test and the general tire carcass deformation theory, an approximate linear relationship between tire force and carcass deformation in all directions was obtained. The vertical force of the tire is determined by the distance between adjacent marker points. The longitudinal force and lateral force of the tire are estimated by measuring the longitudinal and lateral displacements of the marker points.

A Path Tracking Method for an Unmanned Bicycle Based on the Body-Fixed Coordinate Frame

The present study introduces a novel approach for achieving path tracking of an unmanned bicycle in its local body-fixed coordinate frame. A bicycle is generally recognized as a multibody system consisting of four distinct rigid bodies, namely the front wheel, the front fork, the body frame, and the rear wheel. In contrast to most previous studies, the relationship between a tire and the road is now considered in terms of tire forces rather than nonholonomic constraints. The body frame has six degrees of freedom, while the rear wheel and front fork each have one degree of freedom relative to the body frame. The front wheel exhibits a single degree of freedom relative to the front fork. A bicycle has a total of nine degrees of freedom.

Tyre Slip Ratio Estimation Using Intelligent Tyre Concept

Intelligent tyres can offer crucial insights into tyre dynamics, serving as a fundamental information source for vehicle state estimation and thereby enabling vehicular safety control. Among the numerous tyre parameters, slip ratio stands out as a direct influencer of vehicle motion characteristics. Accurate estimation of tyre slip ratio is essential for vehicle safety. Firstly, an analysis of the fundamental composition of tyres was conducted, and appropriate simplifications were applied to the tyre structure. Additionally, a finite element model of the tyre was constructed using ABAQUS software. To validate the reliability of the model, a real vehicle testing system was established, consisting of the experimental vehicle, data acquisition system, and supervisory computer. The reliability of the finite element model was confirmed by assessing the consistency of acceleration signals in three different directions of the tyre.

Modeling and Validation of the Tire Friction on Wet Road

In order to study the tire friction characteristics under wet skid surface, the “pseudo” hydrodynamic pressure bearing effect is used to be equivalent to the hydrodynamics of water film, and an advanced Lugre tire hydroplaning dynamic model is developed by combining the arbitrary pressure distribution function. The water hydroplaning dynamic tests were carried out for 285/70R19.5 tire under wet of different water film thickness and dry conditions, and the parameters of the advanced Lugre tire dynamic model were identified. The results show that the tire water-skiing model proposed in this paper can effectively simulate the friction characteristics of tires under different water film thicknesses. Under dry conditions, 0.5mm water film and 1mm water film road conditions, the relative errors of the maximum tire friction coefficient between the tested and advanced Lugre tire model are 1.11%, 0.12% and 0.16%, respectively.

Vehicle Drop Test Correlation for Two-Wheeler (Motorcycle) Using Multibody Simulation

Off-roading is the scenario of driving a vehicle on unpaved surfaces such as sand, gravel, riverbeds, rocks, and other natural terrain. Vehicle designed for that purpose requires jumping from height due to uneven surfaces/patches. This also requires them to sustain a high amount of loads acting upon them on impact. Thus, off-roading vehicles should not only provide intended vehicle dynamics performance but at the same time should be durable as well. Drop test which is done in a controlled environment is a widely used method to validate the durability of vehicle in such scenarios wherein the vehicle is dropped from a certain predefined height. In Multibody dynamics simulation, drop test was replicated and acceleration data computed at different locations in the vehicle were correlated with actual physical test data. Correlation was done for different drop heights. This paper presents relevant details of the virtual vehicle modeling, loadcase, test data & subsequent correlation.

Analysis of Intrinsic Characteristics and Dynamic Response of New Energy Vehicle Battery Pack System

As the main power source of new energy vehicles, the durability and fatigue characteristics of the battery pack directly affect the performance of the vehicle. The battery pack system was modelled using multi-body dynamics software, with 7 and 13 degree of freedom models developed. Using the established model, the intrinsic properties of the battery pack are computationally analyzed. To calculate the dynamic characteristics, a sinusoidal displacement excitation is applied to the wheel centre of mass, and the displacement and acceleration of the battery pack centre of mass are calculated for both models.The displacement and acceleration curves at the centre of mass of the battery pack of the two models are compared. The results show that the amplitude of the displacement and acceleration curves at the centre of mass of the 13 degrees of freedom model of the battery pack has decreased significantly.

Fitting Laplace Process Parameters for Non-equidistant Road Roughness Data

Road roughness is the most important source of vertical loads for road vehicles. To capture this during durability engineering, various mathematical models for describing road profiles have been developed. The Laplace process has turned out to be a suitable model, which can describe road profiles in a more flexible way than e.g., Gaussian processes. The Laplace model essentially contains two parameters called C and ν (to be explained below), which need to be adapted to represent a road with certain roughness properties. Usually, local road authorities provide such properties along a road on sections of constant length, say, 100 m. Often the ISO 8608 roughness coefficient or the IRI (International Roughness Index) are used. In such cases, there are well known explicit formulas for finding the parameters C and ν of the Laplace process, which best fits the road under certain assumptions.

An Active Suspension Control Strategy for Planet Rover on Rough Terrain

The soft and rough terrain on the planet's surface significantly affects the ride and safety of rovers during high-speed driving, which imposes high requirements for the control of the suspension system of planet rovers. To ensure good ride comfort of the planet rover during operation in the low-gravity environment of the planet's surface, this study develops an active suspension control strategy for torsion spring and torsional damper suspension systems for planet rovers. Firstly, an equivalent dynamic model of the suspension system is derived. Based on fractal principles, a road model of planetary surface is established. Then, a fuzzy-PID based control strategy aimed at improving ride comfort for the planet rover suspension is established and validated on both flat and rough terrains.

A Novel Torque Distribution Approach of Four-Wheel Independent-Drive Electric Vehicles for Improving Handling and Energy Efficiency

This paper presents a torque distribution strategy for four-wheel independent drive electric vehicles (4WIDEVs) to achieve both handling stability and energy efficiency. The strategy is based on the dynamic adjustment of two optimization objectives. Firstly, a 2DOF vehicle model is employed to define the stability control objective for Direct Yaw moment Control (DYC). The upper-layer controller, designed using Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), is responsible for tracking the target yaw rate and target sideslip angle. Secondly, the lower-layer torque distribution strategy is established by optimizing the tire load rate and motor energy consumption for dynamic adjustment. To regulate the weights of the optimization targets, stability and energy efficiency allocation coefficient is introduced. Simulation results of double lane change and split μ road conditions are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DYC controller.

Pantograph Optimization Design Based on the Model of Mining Truck-Road-Pantograph

This study focuses on the operation of trolley-assisted mining truck, which leverage overhead lines for uphill propulsion, substantially reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The pantograph mounted at the truck body's front exhibits complex vibrational behavior due to the subgrade stiffness and the nonlinearities of the hydro-pneumatic suspension. Vertical dynamic model of the mining truck is constructed which considering the road conditions and suspension characteristics to illustrate the pantograph's contact force. The vibration characteristic of pantograph base is analyzed which using the spatial transformation relationship between the truck's center mass of gravity and the base of pantograph. The stiffness of pantograph is designed based on a pantograph-catenary system model considering different road conditions. The real mining truck is modeled in the Trucksim software to obtain the vibration of pantograph base.

Road Feel Modeling and Return Control Strategy for Steer-by-Wire Systems

The steer-by-wire (SBW) system, an integral component of the drive-by-wire chassis responsible for controlling the lateral motion of a vehicle, plays a pivotal role in enhancing vehicle safety. However, it poses a unique challenge concerning steering wheel return control, primarily due to its fundamental characteristic of severing the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the turning wheel. This disconnect results in the inability to directly transmit the self-aligning torque to the steering wheel, giving rise to complications in ensuring a seamless return process. In order to realize precise control of steering wheel return, solving the problem of insufficient low-speed return and high-speed return overshoot of the steering wheel of the SBW system, this paper proposes a steering wheel active return control strategy for SBW system based on the backstepping control method.

Study on Aircraft Wing Collision Avoidance through Vision-Based Trajectory Prediction

When the aircraft towing operations are carried out in narrow areas such as the hangars or parking aprons, it has a high safety risk for aircraft that the wingtips may collide with the surrounding aircraft or the airport facility. A real-time trajectory prediction method for the towbarless aircraft taxiing system (TLATS) is proposed to evaluate the collision risk based on image recognition. The Yolov7 module is utilized to detect objects and extract the corresponding features. By obtaining information about the configuration of the airplane wing and obstacles in a narrow region, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) encoder-decoder model is utilized to predict future motion trends. In addition, a video dataset containing the motions of various airplane wings in real traction scenarios is constructed for training and testing.

Optimization of Mount Bracket on Whine Noise Performance for a Battery Electric Vehicle

Recently, the market share of electric vehicles is becoming increasingly obvious. It is expected that electric vehicles are quieter than fuel vehicles. Actually, without the cover of low-frequency engine noise, the high-frequency noise of electric vehicles is more prominent, which seriously affect the perceived sound quality. The present work is related tonal noise resulted from electric drive system (EDS), which is one of the fundamental noise sources for battery electric vehicle (BEV). The dominant noise sources observed in the vehicle interior are 26th and 36th orders for reducer and drive motor separately. Poor vibration isolation of right mounting system is the fundamental cause identification of EDS noise which has been investigated with objective measurements and simulation tools. Dynamic stiffness analysis is carried out to optimize the passive bracket. An engineering solution is implemented to enhance bracket to improve resonance effect.

Commercial Vehicle's Longitudinal Deceleration Precise Control Considering Vehicle-Actuator Dynamic Characteristics

The installation of the Electronic Braking System (EBS) could effectively improve braking response speed, shorten braking distance, and ensure driving safety of commercial vehicles. However, during longitudinal deceleration control process, the commercial vehicles face not only challenges such as large inertia mass and random road gradient resistance of the vehicle layer, but also non-linear characteristics of the EBS actuator layer. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a commercial vehicle’s longitudinal deceleration precise control strategy considering vehicle-actuator dynamic characteristics. First, longitudinal dynamics of commercial vehicle is analyzed, and so is the EBS’ non-linear response hysteresis characteristics. Then, we design the dual layer deceleration control strategy. In vehicle layer, the recursive least squares with forgetting factor and Kalman filtering are comprehensively applied to dynamically estimate the vehicle mass and driving road slope.

Parameter Identification of Constitute Model of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polypropylene under Adiabatic Temperature Rise Loads

To characterize the stress flow behavior of engineering plastic glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PPGF) commonly used in automotive interior and exterior components, mechanical property is measured using a universal material testing machine and a servo-hydraulic tensile testing machine under quasi-static, high temperature, and high strain rate conditions. Stress versus strain curves of materials under different conditions are obtained. Based on the measured results, a new parameter identification method of the Johnson-Cook (J-C) constitutive model is proposed by considering the adiabatic temperature rise effect. Firstly, a material-level experiment method is carried out for glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PPGF) materials, and the influence of wide strain rate range, and large temperature span on the material properties is studied from a macroscopic perspective.

Dynamic Modeling of Quadrotor-Slung-Load System: A Model Based on the Quasi-Coordinates Approach

With the development of hardware and control theory, the application of quadcopters is constantly expanding. Quadcopters have emerged in many fields, including transportation, exploration, and object grabbing and placement. These application scenarios require accurate, stable, and rapid control, and a suitable dynamic model is one of the prerequisites. At present, many works are related to it, most of which are modeled using the Newton-Euler method. Some works have also adopted other methods, including the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods. This article proposes a new method that solves the Hamiltonian equation of a quadcopter expressed in quasi-coordinate. The external forces and motion of the body are expressed in the quasi-coordinate system of the body, and solved through the Hamiltonian equation. This method simplifies operations and improves computational efficiency. Additionally, a single pendulum is attached to the quadcopter to simulate application scenarios.

Unlike conventional heat shrink tubes or enclosure systems which only seals wires and splices on the outside, a novel Acrylate based sealing technology developed and introduced by Eurotech is a low viscosity fluid formulated to be applied to the splices either in liquid droplets or by dipping, utilizes fast capillary-wicking action and quick self-cure inside the wires to form a robust, cost effective, flexible, impenetrable seal to prevent moisture damage of wire harnesses and associated electrical components. This technology is an enabler of new wire harness architectures currently limited by the shortcomings of conventional sealing products such as heat shrink tubes which come up short when the splice configurations or geometries become too complex or difficult for sealing from the outside.

Exploring Natural Frequency and Damping in Coir-Rubber Polymer Composites for Vibration Control in Mobility Vehicles

This study delves into the dynamic properties of hybrid composite materials, specifically focusing on the natural frequency and modal damping characteristics of Coir Fiber-Rubber Particles Reinforced Polymer Composites (CRP). Comprehensive experimental investigations were conducted utilizing an FFT analyzer. Initial experiments involved the preparation of specimens with varying rubber content, ranging from 2% to 5%. Coir, known for its cellulose-rich composition, was selected due to its innate damping properties, making it highly effective in mitigating vibrations. The primary motivation behind this research is to provide cost-effective solutions for reducing vibrations in mobility vehicles, addressing challenges associated with passenger comfort, durability, and overall performance. The study yielded promising results, with CRP exhibiting substantial reductions in vibrations.
