Effect of Terrain Roughness on the Roll and Yaw Directional Stability of an Articulated Frame Steer Vehicle

Compared to the vehicles with conventional steering, the articulated frame steer vehicles (ASV) are known to exhibit lower directional and roll stability limits. Furthermore, the tire interactions with relatively rough terrains could adversely affect the directional and roll stability limits of an ASV due to terrain-induced variations in the vertical and lateral tire forces. It may thus be desirable to assess the dynamic safety of ASVs in terms of their directional control and stability limits while operating on different terrains. The effects of terrain roughness on the directional stability limits of an ASV are investigated through simulations of a comprehensive three-dimensional model of the vehicle with and without a rear axle suspension. The model incorporates a torsio-elastic rear axle suspension, a kineto-dynamic model of the frame steering struts and equivalent random profiles of different undeformable terrains together with coherence between the two tracks profiles.

UniTire Model for Tire Forces and Moments under Combined Slip Conditions with Anisotropic Tire Slip Stiffness

The tire mechanics characteristics are essential for analysis, simulation and control of vehicle dynamics. This paper develops the UniTire model for tire forces and moments under combined slip conditions with anisotropic tire slip stiffness. The anisotropy of tire slip stiffness, which means the difference of tire longitudinal slip stiffness and cornering stiffness, will cause that the direction of tire resultant shear stress in adhesion region is different from that in sliding region. Eventually the tire forces and moments under combined slip conditions will be influenced obviously. The author has proposed a “direction factor” before to modify the direction of resultant force in the tire-road contact patch, which can describe tire forces at cornering/braking combination accurately. However, the aligning moments which are very complicated under combined slip conditions are not considered in previous analysis.

Tire Model for Turn Slip Properties

In this paper a tire model for describing tire turn slip properties is derived. The tread of the contact patch is divided into many massless elastic elements in both the length and width direction. Carcass deformation is expressed by the translation, bending and twisting function. A turn slip tire model is derived by analyzing the geometric relationships among the deformation of contact patch, tread and carcass. The model is validated by experimental results of parking maneuver. The model seems capable of generating transient and steady state forces and moments for turn slip, and showing varied trend of tire force according to different turn slip velocity. It could not only describe the tread deformation, but also analyze how the tread deformation affects the tire force and moment properties.

Validation of Longer and Heavier Vehicle Combination Simulation Models

This paper discusses the development and subsequent validation process of generic multi-body models for commercial vehicle combinations. The model is intended for performance assessment and improving of current and future combinations for the European road network. A second goal is to employ the model for the development of driver support systems and active steering strategies for both low speed manoeuvrability and high speed stability. The model is developed in SimMechanics, which is part of the MATLAB/Simulink software. Due to its modularity, one can quickly modify the model to the desired configuration and dimensions; therefore various multi articulation vehicle models can be created. The paper further illustrates the simplified and generic modelling methods used to build particular components such as chassis, tyres or suspension in the multibody domain.

Effect of Soil Deformability on Off-Road Vehicle Ride Dynamics

This study analyzes the effect of soil deformation on ride dynamics of off-road vehicles using a quarter-vehicle model integrating different equivalent soil stiffness models. Soil deformation has an effect on the tire sinkage, wheels contact area and the wheels dynamic interaction with the terrain, which affects the overall ride dynamics of the vehicle. Apart from the very simplified equivalent soil stiffness model documented in the literature, a new equivalent soil stiffness model is developed in this study, which encompasses the effect of soil deformability on tire-soil contact area. Two measured ground roughness profiles are then used for vehicle ride dynamics simulation.

Durability and Reliability Test Planning and Test Data Analysis

Durability/reliability design of products, such as auto exhaust systems, is essentially based on the observation of test data and the accurate interpretation of these data. Therefore, test planning and related data analysis are critical to successful engineering designs. To facilitate engineering applications, testing and data analysis methods have been standardized over the last decades by several standard bodies such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). However, over the last few years, several effective testing and data analysis methods have been developed, and the existing standard procedures need to be updated to incorporate the new observations, knowledge, and consensus. In this paper, the common practices and the standard test planning and data analysis procedures are reviewed first. Subsequently, the recent development in accelerated testing, equilibrium based data fitting, design curve construction, and Bayesian statistical data analysis is presented.

Characterization of Driver Steering Control of Articulated Freight Vehicles Based on a Two-Stage Preview Strategy

A two-stage preview strategy is proposed to characterize steering control properties of commercial vehicle drivers. The strategy includes a near and a far preview points to describe the driver control of lateral path deviation and vehicle orientation. A human driver model comprising path error compensation and dynamic motions of the limb is subsequently formulated and integrated to a yaw-plane model of an articulated vehicle. The coupled driver-vehicle model is analyzed under an evasive steering maneuver to identify limiting values of the driver control parameters through minimization of a generalized performance index comprising driver's steering effort, path deviations and selected vehicle states. The performance index is further analyzed to identify relative contributions of different sensory feedbacks, which may provide important guidance for designs of driver-assist systems (DAS).

Power Consumption Analysis of a Flexible-Wheel Suspension Planetary Rover Operating upon Deformable Terrain

This study analyzes the power consumption of a specific Planetary Exploration Vehicle (PEV) subsystem known as Flexible-Wheel (FW) suspension, more specifically the interaction between a FW and the deformable terrain upon which it traverses. To achieve this a systematic and analytical calculation procedure has been developed, which culminates in the definition of three dimensionless properties to capture the FW-soil interaction. Aimed towards the design engineer participating in concept evaluation, and the control engineer conducting initial analyses, this study has found that the resistance coefficient for the interaction between a FW and the deformable terrain can, in general, be several orders of magnitude higher than the rolling resistance of a pneumatic tire operating upon rigid terrain.

Performance Analysis of Active Independent Front Steering (AIFS) for Commercial Vehicles with Greater Lateral Load Shift Propensity

An Active Independent Front Steering (AIFS) offers attractive potential for realizing improved directional control performance compared to the conventional Active Front Steering (AFS) system, particularly under more severe steering maneuvers. The AIFS control strategy adjusts the wheel steer angles in an independent manner so as to utilize the maximum available adhesion at each wheel/road contact and thereby compensate for cornering loss caused by the lateral load transfer. In this study, the performance potentials of AIFS are explored for vehicles experiencing greater lateral load transfers during steering maneuvers such as partly-filled tank trucks. A nonlinear yaw plane model of a two-axle truck with limited roll degree-of-freedom is developed to study the performance potentials of AIFS under different cargo fill conditions.

Handling Comparison of Vehicles with Steerable Auxiliary Axles

Self-steered or caster steered axles are commonly used to support load on multi-axle commercial vehicles. Such axles can allow more payload to be hauled in some vehicle configurations under the existing bridge formulas. These self-steered axles cannot generate a side load, and serve to unload surrounding fixed axles that do generate lateral forces to turn the vehicle with payload. Since the tire's ability to generate a side load is dependent upon its load, the use of caster-steered auxiliary axles can upset the balance (or the understeering) properties of the vehicle. This work will define the effect of adding a caster steered auxiliary axle and compare it with a steerable axle that positively controls the steer angle and thereby generates a lateral force. This work assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of the well publicized “bicycle” model, and particularly its extension to multi-axle vehicles.

Experimental Determination of the Effect of Cargo Variations on Steering Stability

Mission demands for U.S. military tactical trucks require them to transport a broad array of cargo types, including intermodal containers. The wide range of mass properties associated with these diverse cargo requirements has resulted in potential for steering stability issues. The potential for steering stability issues largely originates from the high mobility characteristics of single-unit military tactical trucks relative to typical commercial cargo carriers. To quantify the influence of cargo variations on stability, vehicle dynamics experiments were conducted to obtain steering stability measurements for a tactical cargo truck hauling a broad range of rigid cargo loadings. The basic relationship for the understeer gradient measure of directional response behavior and observed data trends from the physical experiments were used to evaluate the relationship between the steering stability of the truck and the mass properties of the cargo.

Load Estimation of an Open-Link Locomotion Module for Robotic and Commercial Multi-Wheel Applications

An open-link locomotion module, comprising a driving wheel with an electric motor, a system of electro-hydraulic suspension, and an electro-hydraulic power steering system, is presented in this paper as the basis for the modular design of unmanned (robotic) ground vehicles. The open-link-type configuration allows the module to be functionally integrated and engineered with a system of similar modules and thus virtually allows to compile vehicles with any required number of driving wheels. The overall dimensions and carrying capacity of the tire used in the module, as well as technical characteristics of the suspension and power steering systems make possible to employ the module for commercial ground vehicle applications. This paper considers technical issues related to designing the locomotion module.

A Parametric Assessment of Skirt Performance on a Single Bogie Commercial Vehicle

A Department of Energy funded research project currently in the final stages of completion has resulted in a web-based tool that gives non-expert users the ability to add aerodynamic devices to a CFD model of a single bogie trailer and generalized tractor model. This model was used to assess the aerodynamic performance of skirt geometries. The skirts were defined using 5 independent geometric parameters and 2 installation parameters. These parameters allow enough freedom in the geometry definition to capture the shape and installation position and angle of a wide number of commercially available skirts on the market today. Using a Design of Experiments approach, the aerodynamic drag response of the truck and trailer to any parametric change in the skirt geometry has been determined across a range of yaw angles.

Development of Dual-Fuel Low Temperature Combustion Strategy in a Multi-Cylinder Heavy-Duty Compression Ignition Engine Using Conventional and Alternative Fuels

Low temperature combustion through in-cylinder blending of fuels with different reactivity offers the potential to improve engine efficiency while yielding low engine-out NOx and soot emissions. A Navistar MaxxForce 13 heavy-duty compression ignition engine was modified to run with two separate fuel systems, aiming to utilize fuel reactivity to demonstrate a technical path towards high engine efficiency. The dual-fuel engine has a geometric compression ratio of 14 and uses sequential, multi-port-injection of a low reactivity fuel in combination with in-cylinder direct injection of diesel. Through control of in-cylinder charge reactivity and reactivity stratification, the engine combustion process can be tailored towards high efficiency and low engine-out emissions. Engine testing was conducted at 1200 rpm over a load sweep.

Systematic Development of Highly Efficient and Clean Engines to Meet Future Commercial Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Regulations

With increasing energy prices and concerns about the environmental impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a growing number of national governments are putting emphasis on improving the energy efficiency of the equipment employed throughout their transportation systems. Within the U.S. transportation sector, energy use in commercial vehicles has been increasing at a faster rate than that of automobiles. A 23% increase in fuel consumption for the U.S. heavy duty truck segment is expected from 2009 to 2020. The heavy duty vehicle oil consumption is projected to grow while light duty vehicle (LDV) fuel consumption will eventually experience a decrease. By 2050, the oil consumption rate by LDVs is anticipated to decrease below 2009 levels due to CAFE standards and biofuel use. In contrast, the heavy duty oil consumption rate is anticipated to double. The increasing trend in oil consumption for heavy trucks is linked to the vitality, security, and growth of the U.S. and global economies.

Contribution of Add-On Components to the Aerodynamic Drag of a Cab-Over Truck-Trailer Combination Vehicle

Results from a wind tunnel testing program of a cab-over truck-trailer combination vehicle are presented. The model is scaled at 1:3, and represents an accurate replica of currently available trucks and trailers in Australia. Cooling intakes have not been modelled. Reynolds number independence is established to the maximum obtainable in the wind tunnel test configuration adopted equating to a full-scale forward speed of 57 km/h. The wind tunnel is a ¾ open jet facility with a nozzle area of 10.9m2. The vehicle is mounted on a turntable to a 6 component force balance. A range of vehicle add-on devices are investigated, including boat-tails, side skirts, cab extenders, air-dams and roof fairings. Drag measurements are presented over a yaw angle range of 10 degrees.

A Comparison of Full Scale Aft Cavity Drag Reduction Concepts With Equivalent Wind Tunnel Test Results

Comparison studies have been conducted on a 1:16th scale model and a full scale tractor trailer of a variety of sealed aft cavity devices as a means to develop or enhance commercial drag reduction technology for class 8 vehicles. Various base cavity geometries with pressure taps were created for the scale model. The studies confirmed that length has an important effect on performance. The interaction of the boat-tailed aft cavity with other drag reduction devices, specifically side skirts, was investigated with results showing no discernable drag performance interaction between them. Overall, the experiments show that a boat-tailed aft cavity can reduce the drag up to 13%. Full-scale tests of a commercially derived product based on these scale tests were also completed using SAE Type II testing procedures. Full-scale tests indicated a fuel savings of over 6.5%.

In-Situ Emissions Performance of EPA2010-Compliant On-Highway Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

Implementation of EPA's heavy-duty engine NOx standard of 0.20 g/bhp-hr has resulted in the introduction of a new generation of emission control systems for on-highway heavy-duty diesel engines. These new control systems are predominantly based around aftertreatment systems utilizing urea-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) techniques, with only one manufacturer relying solely on in-cylinder NOx emission reduction techniques. As with any new technology, EPA is interested in evaluating whether these systems are delivering the expected emissions reductions under real-world conditions and where areas for improvement may lie. To accomplish these goals, an in-situ gaseous emissions measurement study was conducted using portable emissions measurement devices. The first stage of this study, and subject of this paper, focused on engines typically used in line-haul trucking applications (12-15L displacement).

Sample Size Reduction Based on Historical Design Information and Bayesian Statistics

Numerous test data have been generated in many testing institutions over the years and the historical information from previous similar designs and operating conditions can shed light on the current and future designs since they would share some common features when the changes are not drastic. To effectively utilize the historical information for current and future designs, two steps are necessary: (1) finding an approach to consistently correlate the test data; (2) utilizing Bayesian statistics, which can provide a rigorous mathematical tool for extracting useful information from the historical data. In this paper, a procedure for test sample size reduction is proposed based on historical fatigue S-N test data and Bayesian statistics. First, the statistical information is extracted from a large amount of fatigue test data collected over the years.

Integration of Lane Keeping Assistance with Steering

A novel speed and position dependent Lane Keeping Assistance (LKA) control strategy for heavy vehicles is proposed. This LKA system can be implemented with any torque overlay system capable of accepting external position or torque commands. The proposed algorithm tackles the problem of lane keeping in two ways from a heavy vehicle's perspective. First, it stabilizes the vehicle's lateral position by bringing it to the center of the lane and giving it the correct heading to stay there. This is done using a speed and position dependent control strategy that becomes less aggressive as the vehicle's speed increases and as it gets closer to the center of the lane. Such speed and position dependency is especially critical in heavy vehicles where unnecessary aggressive control can lead to oscillations about the lane's centerline when cruising at high speeds.
