Contamination + Microbes = Corrosion + Malfunctions: An Equation which Yields Trouble for Aircraft Integral Fuel Tanks 680231

Contamination and corrosion of integral fuel tanks in military and commercial airplanes continue to plague the aviation industry.
If we are to minimize losses due to contaminated, poor quality fuel, we must have a better understanding of: the types of contamination which may be expected; the source of these contaminants; their effects on aircraft performance and structural integrity; and preventive measures which can be taken to minimize these effects.
Water, dirty water, surfactants, mercaptans, acids, and microorganisms are the contaminants. Make sure that only fuel gets into your tanks!
