Computer Time Sharing and Engine Design 680240

This paper illustrates new methods of using the computer as an aid in the definition and solution of problems. The old excuse that a computer is too expensive and too complicated is no longer valid. With the advent of time-shared computing it was found that many of the problems experienced in the past had to do with just working the mechanics such as control cards, punches, and tape drives, whereas with time sharing just about anyone can be taught computer usage in less than an hour.
To develop the proper attitude toward computer usage, one must not ask “How much will it save me?” but rather “How much will it earn for me?”
Remote time-shared computing refers to the computer having been taught to communicate with a large number of users at one time. The advantages of this time-shared computer terminal are reduction in cost (user pays for only that time he uses), ready availability, fast turn-around time, as well as simplicity of operation.
